THEATER & ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS, A FUNDRAISER (Isabel Oshiro) Support for the 1991 Theater and Entertainment Book sales by the membership was very heartwarming, and the profit realized helped to finance many of our Chapter activities last year. I will be asking for everyone's support once again as we kick off Entertainment Book and Theater Ticket sales in June/July. A total of 204 Entertainment Books were sold during 1991, bringing $1,539.00 to the Chapter treasury, plus an additional $1,284.00 from sales of season and single Theater Tickets. The 1992-93 theater season brings KISS ME KATE, MERRY WIDOW, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and GYPSY, a terrific selection of Broadway hits. Don't forget to place your orders with Isabel...(Ed) 88th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR DR. YOSHIYE TOGASAKI - (Mollie Fujioka) The March 28th CULTURAL EVENT held at the Silver Dragon Restaurant in Oakland was attended by a capacity crowd of 250 friends and well wishers of Dr. Yoshiye Togasaki, affectionately known as "Dr. Togie". The celebration was hosted by the Diablo Valley Chapter and paid tribute to Dr. Togie for her lifetime of service to the community, state and nation...and was a labor of love by all the participants. The program included songs by Dr. John Kikuchi, the "Bing Crosby" of our Chapter singing SMILE and DAHIL SA-IYO (Because of You) in Filipino, and dedicated to our honored guest... (Dr. John was in rare voice -Ed), and a beautiful dance - SHOCHIKU- BAI by the RYUSHIKAI OKINAWA DANCERS in their very colorful costumes. The highlight of the evening was "This Is Your Life - Dr. Yoshiye Togasaki" EMCEED by "Ralph Edwards" Eizo Kobayashi, written, directed and produced by Eizo and his GANG (Elsie Baukol, Mollie Fujioka, Mary Kobayashi, et al). The program included family, friends, co-workers and everyday people whose lives were touched by this amazing woman and brought laughter, tears and many fond memories. This MOTHER OF ALL CHAPTER EVENTS was co-chaired by Elsie Baukol, Mollie Fujioka and Eizo Kobayashi, with a very large supporting cast of volunteers: Leah Hamachi (artwork on the invitations and host/hostess tags); Ellen & Ed Kubokawa, Sumi & Jack Nakashima, Alice & Kin Kanagaki (addressing & mailing invitations); Yukio Wada & George Fujioka (Treasurer & Reservations); Isabel & Tom Oshiro, Elsie Baukol, Leah Hamachi, Nancy Home, Jon & Lisa Kubokawa (folding 1001 Cranes); Jene & Kathryn Otagiri (arranging for Birthday CAke); Lisa Kubokawa (name tags); Chiyeko Tahira & Jean Yee (Floral arrangements); Tom Shimizu (designing the oversize check); Maya Shiroyama, Sam & Edie Cohen, Jim Ryugo, Jo Anne Wong(Registration/Guest List table); Leah Hamachi, Ellen Kubokawa, Gish & Takako Endo, Mike Hamachi, Mary Kobayashi, Ed Kubokawa, Jon & Lisa Kubokawa, Jack & Sumi Nakashima (Host/Hostess); Yo Ikeda, Steve Endo, Aki Hara, Alice Kanagaki, Tom Shimizu, Shizu Aka (Photographers). SPECIAL THANKS to: Gish Endo Wholesale Florists for all the flowers, center pieces, table decorations and corsages; Chiyeko Tahira for the vases and flower arrangement; Sumitomo Bank for the program covers; Mrs. Yamashita of Hanford for the use of the Red Chanchan-ko and cap; Nancy Home and the RYUSHIKAI OKINAWA DANCERS; Eric Mayer for videotaping the event; for Tom Shimizu's donation of VHS tapes and an album; and finally Aki. Hara & Steve Endo for the films used in taking pictures. JASEB BINGO - CHAPTER PARTICIPATION NIGHT Friday, June 5th, Chair: Tom Shimizu 935-6753 Tom Shimizu will need 24-25 volunteers on June 5th to meet our Chapter's commitment to JASEB Bingo. The Chapter receives $500 every time we participate, and the money is a big help in balancing our budget. If you have not helped before, we will train you, so please call Tom to volunteer. Also, if each volunteer could bake 2 dozen cookies for the concession stand, it will be appreciated. And thanks to Dorothy Takato and Mary Takai for representing our Chapter and providing help at the recent JASEB Bingo night. JASEB Bingo nights fall on the third Friday of every month and Mary Takai has been discharging our Chapter's responsibilities four Fridays a year. Many, many thanks Mary... - 4 -
