SEPOL FACES HOLLY TONITE P I O N E E R SPORTS Page 6 January 21, 1943 ARAIANS LOSE TO PIRATES The highly-touted Royal Araians found themselves on the short end of a 39-37 score when they battled the Granada Pirates in the main game at the Granada high gym on Monday. The Araians jumped into an early lead ( and held a 9-5 advantage in the first quarter, but their play lapsed and by the end of the third period they trailed the Granada boys 29-24. The competition grew hotter as the final quarter progressed but the Pirates never lost their lead and as the final gun sounded the score was 39-37 in their favor. Sab Karatsu took scoring honors with 12 points for the Araians. Neils Hanson was high for the Pirates with 11. ARAIANS (37) (39) PIRATES Karatsu 12 F 10 Rice D. Kojima 4 F 5 Tyner Sh. LAKE OPEN TO ICE SKATERS Hideaway lake, located west of the camp, is now available to ice skaters, announces the recreation department. It will take approximately 20 minutes to reach this destination, they added. The lake will accommo- date 400 to 500 skaters and permits to go there will be issued by H. M. Tomlin- son of the police depart- ment at the south adminis- tration building. Skookums Meet Laners Monday A basketball .battle of the century, which may well be a pre-season tip-off as to the top of the league, is in store for the fans Monday when the Modesto Skookums and the Kau Kau Laners tangle in the feature game of a doubleheader at the Granada high school gym. Both squads are lined with seasoned players and are capable of providing the spectators with a thrill-a-minute game. The Skookums and the Lansrs have both chalked up impressive wins over the Granada Pirates. In the first game at 7:30 p.m., the Lindy Hoops will face the Delta Mercuries. Each of these teams have played a practice game; the Hoops losing to the Pirates' and the Deltans winning over the Rocky Ford-Swink team. ROCKETS TOP ARAIAN A'S The Royal Araian second team fell before the Living- ston Rockets 31-15 in the curtain raiser on Monday at the Granada gym. The Rockets were unable to hit the loop In the first half and led by a slim 10-7 margin. They, piled up the score in the second half while holding their oppo- nents to a mere six points. FIREMEN TO PLAY AEROS IN OPENER The Sebastopol Sakura Ramblers will play their first basketball game of the season this evening when they meet the Hclly town team at the Granada high school gym. The Sebastopol team was a runner-up in the strong- est basketball league at the Merced assembly cen- ter. The strength of their opponent is unknown. The Amache fire depart- ment and the Aeros will meet in the preliminary game which starts at 7:30 p.m. Both are A teams. Hoke Pushes Participation Head Coach John C. Hoke of the center high school yesterday morning stated that he had no objections to students on high school basketball squads playing in leagues sponsored by the recreation department. "I heartily approve of all the boys in the high school participating in any and all programs which will lead to their physical development as the facile- ties available to the high school are so limited," said Hoke, ' "This includes any program that might be sponsored by the recrea- tion department." Squad Members Sell Tickets Members of the Amache high school varsity and B cage teams are selling tick- ets to their games with the Holly Wildcats Saturday eve- ning at the Granada gym. The tickets, which are priced at 15 cents for stu- dents and 25 cents for a- dults, are also on sale at the high school principal’s office. ICE RINK BUILT An experimental ice skat- ing rink, 40 by 60 feet, has been built at 8K by the young people of the block. The rink is for private use only.
