ELMER’S Sportunes by ELMER IOKA FINAL WARNING Last Wednesday, we ob- served in the sports page a warning in regard to the spectators' behavior in watching a game...However, some of the fans are still disregarding that warning and are still swarming near the batter...We are not forcing these people to give the players sufficient space, but should there be a re-occurrence of last Sun- day's accident, it would be a case of embarrassment and suffering for the vic- tim, especially after this timely notation... AMBITIOUS "JIB" Ever since Oct. 14, 1942, when the PIONEER made its glorious debut, there lurked an ambitious figure by the name of Jiro "Jib" Sumita. It was he who offered his services to the community by giving the residents the latest dope on sports. On Monday, his faithful typewriter was hushed as Jib wrote "30" to the sports page and his column, "Bulls- eye. "...We deeply regret his departure, not only because he was a sports writer but also because he was a square guy... BROKEN BATS As this sports writer looked back in the files, we uncovered an article regarding broken bats. It said in part: "Residents breaking bats belonging to the recreation department will be charged half of the original cost of the bat.. .." Such an edict released by the recreation depart- ment is partially unfair to the one who borrowed it ... It is true on the part of the department that there are some bats carelessly broken, but charging a per- son for them is a little too much… CASABA EXAM FOR PREP GIRLS "The senior high girls are taking basketball tests this week, and are being drilled on the fundamenta1s of the game, "stated Joseph- ine Korsoski, gym instruct- tor, yesterday. The girls are expected to take up softball soon.
