Page 6______________________PIONEER___________________December 8, 1943 DUSTERS FIRST QUINT DUMPED BY ‘VISITORS’ IN TWO SEASONS Nob Kuwatani’s two quick Baskets in the closing mi- nutes turned the tide in Las Animas favor as the visitors came from behind to win a hard-fought 33-30 tussle from the ragged Dus- tors quintet in the first of Sunday afternoon's triple- header at the local gym. Both teams slam-banged away point-for-point during the first half with neither side enjoying a commanding lead, but Las Animas held a slim one-point margin at the end of first two quar- ters, 11-10 and 17-16. Vis- tors’ lightening-fast Ted Maruyama and easv-going El Sakai were setting a steady pace, while Duster John Ni- izawa’s scoring was keeping the home cagers in the game. In the third canto, the Dusters really found them- selves and opened up a neat 26-19 lead that set the stage for what was expected to be a Duster triumph, but they figured without taking Kuwatani into account. Las Animas came back strong in the Final stanza to close the gap slowly but steadily, thanks to Kuwatani’s 8 point spurt, and successfully nursed a 3 point margin in the last two minutes for victory. This was the first loss suffered by a center team to an “outside” nisei quintet in two seasons. the game. High point honors went to Maruyama and Kuwatani of Las Animas with 13-10 digits respectively, and Duster’s Niizawa with 10 points. MENDA HITS 20 YOORES SWAMP CROWLEY 64-27 Visiting Crowly basket - ers put on a disappointing exhibition of casaba tos- sing in their lop-sided 24-27 loss to the fast Yoo- res double-A aggregation In last Sunday afternoon's second fray. The score could have been much higher if the local lads had their usual shooting-eye. First half score stood at 22-13 in Yoores' favor but it didn't even begin to tell the story of game's one-sidedness as the maroon - clad tossers missed scores of easy set-shoos under the goal. Things were very much different in the second half with Yoores' forwards Menda and Kashiwabara hit- ting the hoop regularly to garner 20 and 18 tallies respectively. For Crowley, center Sam Ashida with 15 markers was the leading scorer.
