Mark Barsotti is out, Fresno State can't get in and Michael Jor¬ dan is afraid to keep sticking it out This is hell. I suppose I can deal with the fact tha t Barsotti is out for six weeks if he can. The fact that he's the NCAA leader in passing efficiency and thathewasonewinaway from an "unofficial" record before he broke his left fibula aside, the human body is not invincible. Of course, I'd much rather see him in uniform than in a cast and crutches, butif sail spilled milk now. Whining won't do us any good. Barsotti isn't going to pout about it, so neither am I. As for the Bulldogs as a w hole, the situation is quite differ¬ ent The Associated Press is too concerned with the Florida States, Miamis and Washingtons of the world to notice that FresnoState— a real, live NCAA football team — is 6-0. The Associated Press has made an attempt tapacify FSU with a ranking of 28tinn the country. Yipee. * V* The trendy excuse is that the Bulldogs' schedule is too easy. While No. 1 Florida State is tan¬ gling with No. 3 Michigan and No. 2 Washington is playing No. 7 Cal, the Bulldogs are screwing around wijh the likes of Long Beach State and New Mexico. -~ With all due respect to. any¬ one who sides with AP on this one, I think ifs a pile of crap. Granted, the schedules of those teams are tougher, but Fresno State has beaten two Pac-10 teams, a WAC team and two Big West teams this season. Regardless of whether or not they were the strongest teams in their respective conferences, the Bulldogs beat them. Period. These are legitimate NCAA football teams. It's not as if the Bull¬ dogs are picking on local Pop Warner teams or the local high school JV squads. I'm not, by any means, say¬ ing that Fresno State should be in the top 10. I am advocating that being 6-0 and one of only four unde¬ feated teams in the country merits more than 28th place. Florida' State (7-0) is first Miami (6- 0) is second, Washington (6-0) is third and North Carolina State (6-0) is 12th. The Bulldogs (60) are 28th. What gives? Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs were 28th. After they beat Long Beach State, 42- 1 4. ..they dropped to 29th in the AP poll! After beating New Mexico State, 42-28, last Saturday, theAir sociated Press graced them with a leap of one — count it, one—spot to No. 28. Give us a break, AP. There is worse news in the world of sports than the fate of the TheAP, has made an attemp t tapas- sive FSU with a ranking of 28th in the cortyJlhe trendy excuse is that the Bulldogs' schedule is too easy. FSU football team, though. Michael Jordan is locking up his tongue After years of flashing and flailing his little red appendage all Over the NBA, Jordan said Sunday that "ifs a bad habit" and he is going to buy himself a mouthpiece to keep it under control. The shame! The horror! The tragedy of it all! In all seriousness, ifs a wise move for Jordan. Better to keep that puppy locked up than have it wiggling on the floor of the Salt Palace or the Great Western Forum someday. In that regard, mine is a stupid argument Ifs the ramifications I'm worried about though. What about all the little kiddies on playgrounds around the world who imitate Mike's tongue when they're glid¬ ing in for a lay-up. What about all of the posters and Whea ties boxes with pictures of Air Jordan's flying tongue? Jordan's tongue should have a spot waiting for it in the Smith¬ sonian. If s as much a part of American sports as lite beer com¬ mercials, crotch-grabbing baseball players and "the wave." / But, alas, Michael is locking up his licker and nothing I can say or do will change that. The meaning of all of this is obvious: the world is coming to an end. Barsotti's in a cast Jordan's in a mouthpiece and Fresno State is in 28th place. This is hell.
