Sports. The Daily Collegian • February 14,1992 Davis leads UCSB past FSU Dan Evans Sports Writer It all seems so easy in practice. In a game Fresno State head coach Gary Colson thought his squad had a legitimate chance to win, the Bulldogs fell victim to their own weakness in a 77-61 thrashing by UC Santa Barbara before 9,880 "Red Wavers" Thursday night at Selland Arena. "This hurts. It hurts to the core," Colson said. "This was a really impor¬ tant game for us in the overall picture. I must be nieve because I really thought we were going to win." Wrong. The Bulldogs' third-straight loss and second of the season at Sel¬ land Arena drops them to 14-10overall and 5-7 in the Big-West Conference. The Gauchos are 15-5,8-3. But the Bulldogs were not victim¬ ized solely by their own lackluster per¬ formance. Lucius Davis helped, too. The 6-8 senior forward scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half and added a team-high 10 rebounds in a masterful r performance. Davis shot 66% from the floor (10 of 15) and accounted for eight of the Gauchos' first 11 points. Tod Bernard and Wil Hooker scored 15 points apiece for the Bulldogs and Lee Mayberry added 11. Idris Jones had 16 points for UCSB and Ray Kelly contributed eight points and dished-off 10 assists. Gauchos' head coach Jerry Pimm said his plan to move Davis around to dif- - ierent locations on thceourt was key to his squad's success. "What we trying to do was move lou' around and try to keep (the Bull¬ dogs) from switching up on him," Pimm said. "I'm glad it was confusing because I tried to make it that way." The majority of Davis' success came in the first half when he was matched- upwith the Bulldogs' Tod Bernard. The second half saw FSU'S Lee May¬ berry and Pat Riddlesprigger quiet the Big West's second-leading scorer. "Fresno State is a very good team^ Davis said. "The/ vebeen up and down this year, but I know, as a player, that they work very hard. They have a team full of great athletes. Sometimes, sea¬ sons go like that.' The Bulldogs self-destruction came courtesy of a lack of communication, according to Colson and Bernard. The Bulldogs commited 16 turnovers and threw away several key passes. "One thing I pride my team on is being good passers," Colson said. "We've worked hard everyday since October 15th, but we were put of sync (against the Gauchos). We had a defen¬ sive lapse with five seconds gone on the clock. *. f "We ran a little simple offense for Wil and we threw it to a lady in the fourth row." With the loss, the Bulldogs miss out pn a chance to redeem themselves from a 75-55 thrashing at the "Thunder- dome" in Goleta on Jan. 20th. In that game, Hooker and Bernard combined for just seven points. "I think deep down inside, we know we're better than them," Hooker said. Though the Bulldogs shot 60 percent, in the first half (12 of 20) and trailed 32- 29, their second-half' lapse cost them the game. They hit on only 11 of 29 shots (37%) after the break and fin¬ ished the game at 46 percent. The Gauchos, who entered the game with the stingiest defense in the confer¬ ence (al)owing 643 points per game) shot 54% for the game and rebounded strongly froma 80-76 loss to UNLV last Thursday. "I don't think this is an easy place to play or an easy team to beat," Pimm said. "They're a talented team and I think they'll get back on the beam. This team is not through, by any means. Believe me." NOTES: Davis' father, Lucius Sr., was the all - ti me leading scorer in Fresno State history before he was surpassed by Hooker earlier thii season. . .The loss drops the Bulldogs into seventh place in the Big WestJ behind idle Cal State Fullerton.. .ColsWsaid-Llavis is a strong candidate for Big West Player of the Year and, though his original assessment was different, the NBA.. .The Bulldogs will host Long Beach State Monday nigh t a 19 p.m. The game will be/the third game of ESPN's "Big Monday" tripleheader..
