According to Brandt, within a twenty-four hour period of time, the team was to evaluate their options, prepare a writ¬ ten report, and then orally present their report to a panel t>f judges. The judges were rep¬ resenting the city planning commission and members of the financial community. The written report that was prepared by the team for the judges was nearly thirty pages in length. All of the informa¬ tion that the team was to util¬ ize and refer to was compiled within those twenty-four hours. The coach of the team is Dave Leue, an instructor here at CSUF. His input in the ac¬ tual competition is minimal. Once the competition begins, he acts merely as a logistical force, attaining materials and food for the team; however, his coaching takes place over the months prior to the event. "The students on the team put in four of five months at weekly meetings, preparing themselves, engaging in weekly speech preparations, and discussing sample proj¬ ects that they may have to consider," Leue stated. Leue went on to indicate that CSUF has a nationally recognized construction man^ agement department, despite the fact, that the discipline is only 20 years old. Leue said participation in such competitions aredifficult if the events are regionally located. The funding that is required to get a team to such an event is primarily received from outside sources or through fundraisers that the team members directly engage in. However, the benefits that the team members receive are immeasurable. When questioned about the competition's impact, Brandt replied, "This is the best expe¬ rience that I've had. The com¬ petition incorporates every class that I've taken in my four years as a construction man¬ agement student into one learning experience." Brandt and Renna.were the only two women involved in the NAHB competition, which included 18 teams from across America. According to Leue, these competitions represent real- life situations that graduating construction management students face, and are quite possibly the most important learning tool that CSUF stu¬ dents are given the opportu¬ nity to work with. Graduating senior Andrade felt that the competitions were vital to his education, not only for their content, but also for the interaction of the team. Says Andrade, "I've never worked so closely with a team in my life." Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time. —H.L.Mencken Women Needed!
