Tuesday, ', Feb. 2,1993 The Daily Collegian Sports — 7 Swim teams gear for WAC Championships By Michael Hughes Sports editor When swimming coach Daniella Irle tells her team to reach for higher goals, she knows of what she speaks, and her swimmers are re¬ sponding to the challenge. Irle, who last season helped lead the Texas women's team to a sec¬ ond-place finish at the NCAA Championships as an assistant, is building on the success of her pre¬ decessor, Teri McKeever. Irle's challenge is to set the Bull¬ dogs^ sights not only on dual-meet and regional success, but on na¬ tional success'that will result in appearances by FSU swimmers at the NCAA Championships. "These teams have learned a lot about Rimming and racing at a new level, and that's what I have asked them to do," Irle said. "I'm - working with them on strengthen¬ ing their strengths and eliminating their weaknesses, and they've done a good job at that" With one dual meet remaining before the WAC Championships, Irle's teams are building toward a peak they hope will be high enough Yvette Tristan to challenge for WAC titles. Irle said approximately 60 percent of her swimmers' most-recent times were season-bests. . Against Northridge and Bakers- field over the weekend, the women swept both meets and the men split, defeating Northridge". Sophomore Yvette Tristan set a Fresno State record in the 200-yd. butterfly Saturday against Northridge, when she touched the wall in 2:06.26. She now holds two school records and shares four oth¬ ers with relay teammates. Carrie Bennett has been the standout of a freshman class tagged as "the best ever to attend FSU." Named the "Major Video FSU Female Athlete of the Week" last week, Bennett has won five of her last seven freestyle-sprint races. A pillar of strength throughout the season for the men's team has been junior Garrett Nishimoto. who has won nine races, and is the odds - on favorite every time he swims the 200-yd. breaststroke. Senior Dave Noble, FSU's record-holder in the 200 and 500- yd. freestyle, returned to his win¬ ning form over the weekend, win¬ ning all four of his races. Freshman Dennis Penner has also given the Bulldogs a needed boost since join- , ing the team after the fall semester. Entering Saturday's final meet against Pacific, the women have a 9-4 record, and the men stand at 3- 7. Success in.dual meets alone, however, is hot the measure of successful programs, Irle said. Irle's coaching philosophy is to work her swimmers hard through¬ out the season, and rest them prior to the conference meet - "I feel real good about where- we'll be at conference," Irle said. "We could probably take third on an off day. We're not expected to win events, but we will." Tennis 'Dogs open home schedule today The Fresno State Men's tennis team will open its home schedule against UC Davis today at the FSU tennis courts. Following its loss to No. 5 UCLA last Tuesday, the Bull¬ dogs are 0-1 on the season. Fresno State is ranked No: 3 in the NCAA's Region VII, and Bulldogs Nils Koitka and Steve Jackson are ranked in the indi¬ vidual poll. Today's match is the begin¬ ning of FSU's busiest month. . The team will play five dual ~ matches and three tournaments in a 26-day span. Match <hne is set for 2 p.m. t Riech From page 6 years, and has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships two of those years. He also com¬ peted in the Olympic Trials in 1992 but didn't qualify for a trip to Barcelona. Coach Red Estes said the extent of R iech' s injury has been difficult to determine. "It's hard to say because the train¬ ers and doctors aren't really sure exactly what it is>" Estes said. "It seems more muscular than it does '■vertebral or a disc problem, which is-encQufaging." Accordi ng to NCAA rules, in an injury situation, a decision on whether to redshirt an athlete can be postponed until the halfway point of the season, which falls in April. If the athlete has competed in less than 20percentofthe team's meets, than he is eligible to be a medical redshirt, which would mean Ricoh could be eligible to compete next year. However, Riech is working hard now^ to throw the javelin this season. "I'm doing a lot of lower back exercises to strengthen it up," Riech said. "Hopefully, I'll be throwing again within the next couple of weeks." Estes said Riech's value to the team is compounded because the Bulldogs do not have an experi¬ enced replacement for Riech. ' "In the WAC, we're going to have to scrape'together every point we can to even,be in the hant," he said. "With Todd, we're probably looking at first place in the confer¬ ence, so definitely it would hurt us if he were not there."
