The Dally Collegian Monday; November 14.1968 Page 7 FSU beats UCSB, loses to Mustangs BY JENNIFER KONZE Sports Writer Fresno State's women's volleyball team ended a four-game losing streak and setter Traci Sliester coasted to a career record defensive save (dig) mark in Saturday's 3- 2 victory over UC Santa Barbara after losing a 1-3 decision lo Cal Poly-SLO. Sliester takes tbe Na 1 spot from former Bulldog Denise Fowler (911,1983- 86) and continues to**Wd to her total of 924. - "Records and stuff arc nice. They're nice when you leave," Sliester said. "But, the most important thing is to win as a team. That's what is so awesome about tonight. We won." The victory over UCSB was ihe epitome of teamwork. Four of six Bulldog hitters went into double-digit kills as did six of eight diggers. Led by middle blocker Lynette Wilke with 18 kills, other Bulldog hitlers recorded double-digit attack figures including outside hitter Jenni McArtor (17) and middle blocker Lesli Lopes (14). Almost back up to 100 percent is outside hitter Melanie Estes who had injured he ankle four weeks ago during a home match against Cal Poly-SLO. Estes recorded 12 kills, three service aces and was second in digs with 19. "For a while I was gelling real frustrated with myself the first couple of matches I was back," said Estes. "Watching them [the team] and how well they were playing without me made want to get back in faster. So. I kept my confidence up and did my best. My ankle was willing, finally.'' -. She said her ankle is still a little weak and she is not at full jump. "As long as I use my head Ihe jump's not going to affect me too bad," she said. Teamwork prevailed once again with five of eight Bulldogs recording double- digit digs. McArtor led the dig effort with 21 followed by Estes (19) and Sliester (IS). Outside hitters Melissa Simms-Ferrari and Michele Simms rounded out the team effort with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. .Blocking honors were owned by Lopes who recorded five solo blocks for a personal best Currently, the lop three Bulldog solo and assisted blockers are Wilke (6-1). Lopes (6-0) and Sliester (5-8). On the other side of Ihe net the UCSB Gauchos lacked teamwork and failed to capitalize on Fresno Slate's mistakes. "I think that we had our chances to win. We just didn't lake advantage ol them," said Kathy Gregory, UCSB women's coach Cal Poly-SLO def. FSU 3-1 The Bulldogs were defeated by the Cal Poly-SLO Mustangs and their own icnaiiveness in Friday's match "Our' team just starts getting lenative," said Overstreet. "When it gets down to it instead of firing right at ihem every single time we give them things we shouldn't give them." Fresno Slate lacked an effective attack and Cal Poly kept digging up the "Dogs' attack attempts. Down 1-13. the Bulldogs started to creep up the point scale but only got as far as four before being downed 4-15. "You've go lo have really outstanding performances from your left side hitlers, really outstanding performances to ever win." said Overstreet. "Even if your middle blockers are doing a good job your outside hitters have got to do it too. "It seems like when we have good performaces in ihe middle our outside is bad, and good outside performances our middle is bad." she said Fresno Slate's Simms-Ferrari was in excellent form with 12 kills, two attack errors out of 32 total attacks for a hitting percentage of J13. Fresno State is now 14-15 overall Ihis season and 4-12 in the Big West DOGS SOCCER Continued from page 6 the NCAA semifinals before losing to the University of Akron 1-0. Fresno Stale has made a habit of reaching the playoffs: the Bulldogs are one of five teams to have advanced to postseason play in each of the last five years. Evansville is one of the others, along wiih UCLA, SMU and Virginia. The game looked like it would be a shootout early as both teams' goals in regulation lime were scored in ihe first nine minutes. The Rebels had ihe lead first as Kenny Ryerson scored from eight yards away, deflecting a shot by Keith pest Dougherty. But ihe Bulldogs got the goal back 21 seconds later as Paul McCully scored on a 12-yard shot directly in front of the goal after taking a pass from Tim Martin. From there, it appeared that UNLV gained the upper hand, bottling the Bulldogs back in their end with fierce offensive pressure. Fresno Stale was able lo breal: iiic pressure several times for good opportunities, but just couldn't seem to make the final pass or shot for a goal. Martin attributed this lack of success to playoff jitters. "At limes we looked OK but we were impatient," Martin said. "We have a lot of young players in their first playoff game. Well play better next week. "We know what Vegas can do and we didn't worry about them ihis week, we worried about ourselves. And we got a good result, a sweet result," Martin said. Even if ihe offense sputtered at times, ihe defense was as solid as a coach could ask for. The Rebels manufactured numerous chances for themselves, but the Bulldogs were impenetrable when ihe ball went into their goalie's box. S "The defense played very well, despite- ihe fact lhai they got [defender Eric] Wilson out in-the first period," Elgorriaga said. "He's our speedster in the backficld dial can keep up with UNLVs forward line." Wilson went down with twisted knee after a collision and sat out the res: of the game. Contirfued from page 6 range wiih time running out in the first half when the Rebels made a major mistake. 0 Telford was forced oul of ihe pocket and yramMed. for Ihe sideline with two seconds remaining. He made it out of bounds at the Rebel 42 to stop the clock, bui was hit late by UNLVs Gerald Robinson. A flag was thrown and the ball was moved to the 27-yard line. This was suddenly optimum field goal range for FSU kicker Steve Loop, who booted it through fr.vn 44 yards to give the "Dogs a 17-7 halftime lead It looked as if the 'Dogs were set to pour it on in ihe second half. They moved efficiently down the field deep into Vegas territory, but Telford then ihrew a bad pass ihat was intercepted by Rebel line¬ backer Jody Reinoehl. Vegas look advantage of this gift and marched down the field io cut the margin to 17-14 on Murphy's second scoring run, this one from three yards. This had to cause FSU faithful to breathe a bit harder. However, the 'Dogs dug down harrier as ihcy have most of the season and responded with a drive that restored a comfortable cushion. They returned to the groinjd- and marched 74 yards in nine plays, capped by a 12-yard dash by reserve fullback Adrian Cooks. The score made it 24-14 with 5:07 left in ihe third quarter, ihe way il would stay through ihe end of the quarter. FSU'S defense continued to keep the Rebels at bay while ihe offense killed ihe clock by chewing up yardage on the ground. The evening's scoring was capped with another ground-oriented drive when Myron Jones went over the lop again for another one-yard score. That ended a 78 yard drive and made it 31-14 with 10:18 remaining in the game. Vegas put together another drive on its next possession, but it ended when the Rebels' Charles Price was intercepted by 'De;* safely Tony Hams and the leag*ic title'was suddenly in FSU's grasp.
