inion The Dotty Collegian Thursday, Oct. 4, 1990 ASI must be even-handed Jim Proulx It seems that the need for diversity cuts only one way In the eyes ofthe Associated Student Senate, and ASI president Don- Daves. \ Slnce.the semester began, 1 about 30 people have been appointed to ASI corrrmlttees rang-' tag from Food Services to University Budget to KFSR advisory I board. ' Four of those appointed are not people of color. AS senator Mike Garrett of the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology said during the AS senate meeting Tuesday that he objected to people being hired for campus positions because of their race, sex or sexual orientation. "I think what you contribute, or will contribute, is more Important than race, sex or sexual preference." he said. Garrett's remark prompted what has beccrme standard practice by Unlry/SRG whenever the subject of race is brought up. Daves said that "our objective Is to elevate students who have been traditionally locked out of the system." He was then followed by a train of Unity/SRG senators and supporters who each had to have a turn to publicly come out In favor of "diversity." Garrett said that he had no problem with appointing people of color or gays or lesbians to student posts. 'I'm concerned that people'are coming before the senate for approval and saying Tin gay or I'm Indian or I'm African American, therefore. Tta qualified."* said Garrett. "That's not equality." On Monday, the senate did approve the appointment of a. white male. Thomas Savarese. to the Academic Affairs committee. But It wasn't without a fight. Savarese has served for two semesters on that committee, and was. by all accounts, eminently qualified for the Job. Seems simple, right? Wrong. Savarese had to undergo a line of questioning about, get this, why. he would want to do that Job. again, instead of some other post. Although nobody voted against Savarese. a large bloc of Unity/ SRG senators abstained from approving the guy. Somehow. I , get the feeling that they didn't disapprove of him because he was overqualllled. Daves and Unlty/SRG are doing much of what they promised in their campaign last spring: they've given the opportunity for a lot of people to get involved ta. student affairs. That's great. The problem Is that the student population here is about 70 percent white. Let's look at those ccmmlttee appointments again. 87 percent of those appointed represent 30 percent of the students here. OR - 70 percent ofthe students are represented by 13 percent of the committee members.- Is It Just me. or is this Just a ' tad disproportionate? There Is nothing wrong (actually, there Is a lot right), with trying to Include people who have been locked out ta the past. But the ASI is trying to achieve this by locking more people out of these Jobs. I That's not promoting diversity: that's promoting hypocrisy. Letters to the editor Response Editor. I am willing in response to BUI Pierce's letter to the editor (Oct 1 ]. I am very disturbed by the false assumptions you make in using and defining the term "feminism* In your discussion about abortion. You define "feminists" as being "exU emery selfish" Individuals, 'answering to no one and making no sacrifices to others." and as being "completely self-absorbed." Is this what one needs to do in order lo aspire to "real feminism" as you suggest? ... What kind of propaganda are you reading and ascribing to. BUI? By making foolish statements like that all you are doing is perpetuating the myth that "feminists" are man-haters and In the context of your letter possibly Ufejakers. Can you really Justify this? I am a woman who'believes in each Individual's right to fulfill their potential. Obviously I am more sensitive to the plight of women achieving this than men. Does this make me a part of your cxtre mist self- In teres ted Gynarchy militant group? I am Insulted al the tiiouglit of it And what you create here Is another myth women are forced to overcome. What I find most disturbing In your attempts to appear non-sexist Is your InslnuaUon that the only real value women respectfully have Is their ability to bear children. While I do not take this privilege and miracle UghUy. It Is exactly these kinds of statements — giving women only one real value — that Inhibit respect for women. What about the woman's right not to bear children? By your standards, does society not have use for women who are sterile or women who choose not to have children? Also, what you Imply throughout your letter Is that women who are pro-choice cannot think for themselves as to the /consequences of their decisions. Decisions you describe as "whims of a female." Well BUI. It's comments like these that keep sexism alive. I think you need to become more familiar with the Intel ■ Ugence of women and trust tn their ability to make sound decisions before you make and more presumptions on ^ behalf of women. ' . Kris Deutschman Invisible Issues Editor. This Is my second year at Fresno State. I have noticed a profound awareness among the (students) here about such Issues as discrimination, racial tension, and minority rights. I believe this awareness Is largely due to the recognition given to these social problems by the Daily Collegian. However, there Is an Issue pertinent to CSUF students that has not received much attention — the mandatory ran - dom drug testing of student-athletes by the University. This violation of privacy directly affects a substantial portion of the student body and Indirectly affects the rest. The abusive powers of this Institution will continue until the discontent with this policy Is voiced by the student body. ^ Casey Dellabacca Editor's note - DeUabacca was re- jmovedjrom the men's tennis team after refusing to submit to random testing.
