Hope¬ fully, through the services that B AAC is providing, a way will be found to ensure that people who are already infected with HIV are receiving the services and support that they need. BAAC is a group made up of people from the African Ameri¬ can population or of the people serving the African Americans of Fresno County. $* According to one of CVAT's educators, Rebecca Shannon, BAAC has already met three to four times to provide input on who needs to be reached, what the most effective way to reach those indi¬ viduals would be, and any other information that will help BAAC get the message of the perils of HIV out. They've also been discussing possible ways to recruit volun¬ teers so that they can get as many people as possible to provide AIDS education within their own com¬ munities. "Hopefully we will generate enough volunteers to help get the message out," Shannon said. Emma Herndon, a 44-year-old who works for the Internal Reve¬ nue Service, recognizes and has used BAAC influence lo effec¬ tively get that message across. The church she belongs to, St. Pauls CME Church, helped sponsor an AIDS awareness workshop along with CVAT's BAAC on Oct 10. Hemdon said that she was disappointed with the turnout of people, but she felt that people were pro¬ vided with vital in¬ formation about HIV. Herndon had a cousin who died of AIDS, and she said the reason so many people still are not well- informed about the virus arid why most don'i bother to educate them¬ selves about the disease is because of the influences of religion, tradi¬ tions and family. Also, people tend to go into denial when they are confronted with an unwanted situ¬ ation, and the fear of the unknown prevents them from taking appro¬ priate action. For those that do get educated, recognize die risks, and realize that they arc in a high risk cate¬ gory, uiey don't get medical atten¬ tion until'the disease is so far ad¬ vanced mat they arc not able to get the medicine that wi 11 prolong their i lives. Shannon feels the necessity for volun¬ teering is very impor¬ tant in its mission to get the message out to their people be¬ cause the more people they have going to the communities, the more ground they'll be covering in a shorter amount of time and more lives will be saved just in time. Currently BAAC is working with the health department to co- sponsor a conference or commu¬ nity forum to will be held in Feb¬ ruary 1*993. This conference will be focusing on the African Ameri¬ can population and how it is being affected by HIV. Although the focus will be on African Ameri¬ cans, the conference is open to anyone who is interested in at¬ tending. ' The next BAAC meeting will be held from 11:45 a.m. to^l:00 pjn. or Nov. 12 at CVAThead- quarters, 625 N. Palm. Talwar said he thanks all those that helped him, especially Figueroa, who belongs to the Epsilon §igma Rho fraternity. "I hope they don't close it [Noche Latino] up because of this incident. I was having fun," Tal¬ war said. "There's always a few bad people who ruin everything and I don't want them to close it because of this incident."
