Joseph Ortiz, Vintage Days director and student director, said he hoped the new format for the Air Guitar competition, using an MC and touring band, would/Oe used again in upcoming Vintage Days. "Student participation is low and we want to get it back up to where it was before, where it should be to start with." he said. Barsoom said that during this time of the year when there is a concert coming up, it is a difficult time to schedule a band. Plans had been discussed by Vintage Days coordinators to get the music groups Alice In Chains, Fishbone, or Gene Loves Jezebel to appear. However, these groups were un¬ able to attend. Vbout a month before Vintage Days 1993. erwhelming Colorfast, an alternative rock group from San Francisco, was hired for this year's Air Guitar competition. The prizes for the Air Guitar winners were a stereo system for first place; an electric guitar for second; and T-shirts, cassettes, and CDs for third. Groups chosen to participate are first re¬ quired to audition for a panel of committee members. Nine out of the 14 groups who signed up to participate had auditioned. The groups were judged according to origi¬ nality, ability to lip-sync, props, routine and choreography. This year, every group that auditioned was invited to contend. The Vintage Days Committee wanted to attract 6,000 people this year.lhe main ob¬ jective being to fill up the amphitheater. To promote this year's event, there were noontime concerts in the Pit on the Tuesday and Thursday preceding the 1993 Vintage Days events. News spots and ads were taken out in local papers and radio stations, also.
