Friday, Sept 24,1993 QTfje JBatlp Collegian Sports—7 Pre, from page 6 Utah (31 -29) and a heartbreaking, 28-24, loss to Baylor. Utah State opened the season with a 34-13 win over Southwestern Lousiana. In both losses, the Aggies had chances to win "If if s and but's were candy and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas," Weatherbie said. "We have missed out on a lot of oppor¬ tunities. Fundamentally, we are having some problems." "We'd love to get into the Western Athletic Conference," Utah State coach Chuck Weatherbie said. "I think we would be a great addition to the WAC." "(Fresno State is) just an ex¬ cellent offensive football team," Weatherbie said. "Their defense has more speed than any team we have played." Weatherbie. like Sweeney, is blessed with a potent offensive at¬ tack. The second-year coach can count on senior quarterback An¬ thony Calvillo, who has been groomed by former Seattle Seahawk quarterback Jim Zorn, USU's offensive coordinator. Calvillo has passed for 1,057 yards and five touchdowns. His ravoritetargetiswidereceiverCotie McMahon, who caught 21 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown in the Aggies first three games. Utah State's defense is keyed by "Fresno State is just an excellent offensive football team." Utah State head coach Chuck Weatherbie senior linebacker Jermaine Younger, an All-America and Butkus Award candidate. The 6- foot, 245-pounder leads Utah State with 43 tackles, including five for losses. Younger and the rest of the Aggie defense will have to contain the versatileBulldog attack, includ¬ ing two tailbacks on the verge of putting their names in the Fresno State record books. Seniors Anthony Daigle and Ron Rivers are within range of setting school records in rushing touch¬ downs and total rushing yards. Daigle tied Dean Philpott's (1954-57) career touchdown mark with No. 29 last Saturday at New Mexico. Rivers needs just 103 yards to surpass Philpott's total of 2,533. Rivers has already rushed for 435 yards (145 YD/G), good enough to to lead tbe WAC. He is fourth nationally in the same cat¬ egory. With two Bulldogs close to changing the Fresno State history books, Sweeney is hoping FSU fans can match the crowd of 40,048 that witnessed the home-opening win over Oregon State on Sept. 11 or surpass it. "Our football fans are not going to see this team for another three weeks (Oct. 16), and they will see history made, in one of these games to come," Sweeney said. "So we want to encourage our fans to get to the game." WAC, from page 6 munication between the Bulldogs. "We weren't talking," she said. But the Bulldogs did start talk¬ ing in the second game. After the Lobos took a 6-4 lead the Bulldogs outscored the Lobos 11-4 behind the hitting of senior outside hitter Nicole Chen, who had 27 kills and Tuley. Fresno State hit .255 for the match. Sophomore setter Brenda Gregersen started slow, but still had 50 assists. The Bulldogs won't have long to savor this victory because they face UTEP tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the North Gym. "We have to focus when we get on the court and even before the match," Tuley said. Last year the Miners came into the North Gym and gave the Bull¬ dogs everything they could handle. "We've been talking to the team about being extra prepared," Vivas said. "The Minersaren't as predict¬ able, which makes it tougher to play them." Students get in for only $2 with an FSU ID. SSiSL Backs, from page 6 ers are deserving of the records. "It has been a great situation for both of them," Skipper said. "They are both great in their own ways." Skipper, himself, used to be a stand-out running back at Fresno State. What makes their career achievements so impressive is that they have had to share time be¬ tween each other. Rivers is the starter, but on the second offensive possession Daigle gets his tum at tailback. A great example of how well they worked together is what they did against New Mexico last week- Rivers carried the ball 32 times for 205 yards and Daigle had 27 car¬ ries for 128 yards. It was the second week in a row that they both ran for more than 100 yards. What head coach Jim Sweeney likes about the pair is their ability to play together. "There, in no way, has been any jealousy between the two," Sweeney said. "They substitute each other wonderfully. We are blessed to have them both at FSU." Sweeney said he hasn't been surprised on how well they have done since arriving at FSU. "They were great when they got here," Sweeney said. "We'd like to say it has been the coaching, but they are great athletes." Like Sweeney, Rivers hasn't been too surprised on how well he and Daigle have done. Before he was to start his sophomore season after not playing as a freshman. Rivers filled out a team goal sheet and said he was going to rush for more than 1,000 yards. Skipper made Rivers fill out another goal sheet. "He thought my goals were to high," Rivers said. "I knew I could do it. He just said Coach Sweeney would call me into his office and ask about it if I didn't change it." Skipper said he was only try¬ ing to protect Rivers. "It was his first year and I didn't want him to put any added pressure on himself." Skipper said. "He has a lot of confidence in him¬ self, but as a first-year player you don't want go out say ' 1 am going to rush for 1,000 yards." Beside, Skipper was right. Rivers only ran for 989 yards. Soccer, from page 6 ling Wescott moved over the 70- point mark for his career. The FSU co-captain has scored 71-career points, sixth in the school's all- time list. Wescott totaled a personal-best four assists in FSU's 5-4 win over USF last Sunday afternoon. He scored two goals and dished out two more assists in a 7-0 win over Loyola Marymount last Friday night.
