In addition to the bal¬ loons, the group had a booth set up in the Free Speech area'to greet questions and onlookers with a smile and a dose of honesty. National Coming Out Day is an annual event celebrated by indi¬ viduals who have publicly admit¬ ted they lead an alternate sexual lifestyle. They celebrate by getting together for parades and ceremo¬ nies to encourage others with the same tendencies to explore their feelings and accept who they are. "National Coming Out Day is a nation-wide effort to bring it to the attention to the public at large that we are here." said I.GBSA Co- President Mykel Cardoza. . > ' The celebration is. also to en¬ courage the quiet homosexuals to "stop lying, don't hate yourself too much and come out" "Those wJv> choose to be quiet are only hurting themselves," Car tioza said The event gave the LGBSA an opportunity to accomplish one of its main goals this semester, which was ."to become visible" Cardoza said. "We want to be role models for the quiet lesbians, gays and bisexuals." This^vas the group' sfirst chance to be visual this semester. "We're waiting for a spot (in the Free Speech area) for our booth," Cardo7ii said, adding ih.it this would allow for die publicity the club is I seeking. Another goal of the club is "to" try and reach out to the commu¬ nity," "We would like to plant trees on Blackstone," he said. Basically, Cardoza said he would like to do anything to let the public know that the group exists. _ However, Cardoza does not want to take to 60's-style radical¬ ism. "We're tired of marching tbe streets," he said. "We shouldn't have to." "Someday, maybe we'll be al¬ lowed to just be ourselves." Cardoza said. National Coming Out Day gave them the opportunity to do just that. "It's the equivalent of St. Patrick's Day, where the Irish are proud of being Irish. It's aday to be visible," Cardoza said.
