Marshall played a key role, as did senior Travis Stel, who had a much needed big performance, scoring IS points. Stel had been in a shooting slump of late, convert¬ ing on only two of his last 16 shots from the floor for eight points in his last two games. FSU shot over 50% from the floor for the fourth straight game (54%) and hit 17-19 from the free- throw line in an impressive offen¬ sive display, but it was the defense that the Bulldogs took the most pride in. "it was a real physical ball game," said' Marshall. "We pounded them really well on the boards." '1 think our defense is winning games for us," said senior guard Brian Santiago, who dished out eight assists last night. " ^ We're beating them on the boards and when we do that we get good offensive shot selections and we convert on the other end." The Bulldogs' persistent, in- your-face defense has been a team characteristic that coach Gary Colson has emphasized since the beginning of the season. "Coach Colson told us at the start that we have to be a better defensive ball club if we're going to win in the WAC," said Santiago. The defense was led again last night by the big man in the center, Lee Mayberry. The WAC's lead¬ ing rebounder grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with nine points. The 93 points scored by the Bulldogs was the most by an FSU team on the road since they lost 100-98 in an overtime loss to Cal- • State Fullerton three years ago. "I think we're a better team now than at the beginning of the year, because we believe in our¬ selves and expect more out of our¬ selves," said Santiago. FSU plays Hawaii Saturday. bats last seasdn. "We've lost good players, but that happens every season, and these guys will have to step up," Bennett said. FSU is in solid hands at short¬ stop with sophomore Ben Reynoso, who started 48 games at the posi¬ tion, hit .254 and drove in 18 runs. "Benny is now a veteran. He had a good year as a freshman and will solidify our infield," Bennett said. First baseman Mike Roe (.345, 39 RBI) decided not to return for his senior season. Fortunately for FSU, Javier Renteria heated up to¬ wards the end of the year, finishing with a .337 average. The senior was an All-Mideast Regional se¬ lection (8-14, three RBI). Reynoso's double-play partner at second is expected to be junior Jim Fisher, who played one season at the University of Washington and one at Modesto JC. Fisher hit .330 at Modesto and .345 for die Huskies. With Minor concentrating on pitching, the third base job may be awarded to one of a number of candidates who could share the po¬ sition.
