By Art Margosian Despite a scoring rally in the second half, the Fresno State Varsity quintet lost out, 69 to 62, to theSan Jose State Spartans in the season opener for both teams in San Jose Wednesday Night. / The Bulldogs, behind 41 to 31 at half-time, closed the gap to one point, 44 to 43, during the second half only to have ace Spartan guard Carroll Williams connect witf^ four goals and two free throws to put the game on ice for San Jose. "The team looked pretty good, lack¬ ing mainly in individual defensive play and also experience in playing together as a team." Vafldenburgli praised the fine offensive and defensive play of Pounds and the fine rebound work of Smith. The Bulldogs came to within three points of San Jose about mid-way in the period, but costly defensive mis¬ takes gave the Spartans their halftime advantage. Fresno State countered eight straight points to start the second half cutting San Jose's lead to two points. With the score 43 to 42, the Bulldogs missed two free shots,.and then it was all Williams again as the Spirtans pulled out in front. San Jose started to freeze the ball with two minutes left and went on to win. Head coach Bill Vandenburgh commenting on the game, said, goals and four free- shots for 18 points. Center Don Smith was runner-up to Pounds with six goals for 12 points. All-Coast guard Williams with 23 points and forward John Ereeg with 15 points were the high point men for the San Jose Spartans. The Bulldogs will play four games next week, starting off Tuesday night in Stockton against the College of Pacific. Wednesday night, the varsity will meet St. Mary's at Moraga. The San Fran¬ cisco State Gators will be in town next weekend for two games Friday and Saturday night in the new gym. In games Wednesday night COP edged by Chico State, 74 to 71. and St. Mary's trounced the Cal Aggies 95-59. r SAf€l...nS Dr. Susan Wcller, from the University of Texas, found that condoms had an average of 31% failure rate, that Is one out of three that a condom will fall. The Food and Drug Administration tested 89 condoms In a machine simulating sexual intercourse. The condoms were-purchased off retail store shelves and represented major brands.
