Volleyball team struggles to five game win ■ Bulldogs lose control of early lead, stretching match to five games. By Luis Hernandez The Daily Collegian Fresno State's volleyball team pulled out a 15-1..15-12, 13-15.9- 15. 16-14 bam-burner against the visiting Santa Clara Broncos at the North Gym last night. "We had an off night, and Santa Clara played well. The combination was not good for us." Lindy Vivas, Fresno State volleyball head coach, said. Tricia Tuley. with a game-high 29 kills along with 27 digs, led the Bulldogs past the Broncos. Debbie Davis' had 19 kills and six blocks to provide a lethal I -2 punch for the Bulldogs. Despite the impressive statistics. Vivas was not happy with the per¬ formance of her players. "I think our middle players did not play well. Santa Clara's middle players outplayed us." Vivas said. The Bulldogs had gotten a 2-0 lead fairly easy. They blew the Broncos away 15-1 in the first game, and hung on for a 15-12 win in the second game. The Bulldogs seemed to be in complete control of the match. Tuley had racked up nine kills and Davis had six to ease their way to the lead. Fresno State controlled the pace of the match, and did not allow the Broncos to settle down on their play. Sweeping kills by Davis and Tuley s powerful kills led thlesyvay for the Bulldogs. By Erik Pfeifle The Daily Collegian Last night the women's soccer team took on the Pacific Tigers and looked to add to their modest two game win streak. Both teams duked it out like prize-fighters for a game and a half, but it was the University of Pacific that was standing'atthe end. 2-0 f Although Fresno'Slate was able to control the ball and the game for the first half, they were unable to muster anything to show tor it on the scoreboard. A great save by the Pacific goalkeeper on a breakaway shot by Kristin Sinclair, with under two minutes remaining, kept the score at 0-0 going into the half. The second half w as more of the same with Fresno State controlling the tempo, but unable to score. The closest either team came to scoring —irrnhe half was a header b\ Betsv Juergens that went just w ide of the goal. The score remained tied 0-0 go¬ ing into overtime\ ^ Neither team scored in the first overtime, but at the 101:15 point in the second overtime the Tigers _ scored when Kim Hawkins' long _shot into the corner broke the tie. Pacific then scored a few min- ' utes later to preserve the v ictoty—- its first of the'y ear. "I think that we lacked the strength in the end to finish it. They had not won a game yet and the> were very hungry We were not as hungry as they were." Head Coacfc, Peter Reynaud said "They were a lot more aggressive." The Bulldogs dropped to 3-2 for the year and will ha\e^ chance to get back on the w inning track w ith a home game against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
