Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Sports THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Tuesday, October 1,1996 Torigian takes good with bad By Luis Hernandez The Daily Collegian Meet Arem Torigian, the 5- 8, 180 pounds Fresno State's football team place-kicker, whose right foot is charged with dynamite and full of thunderous kicks. As the starting place-kicker, Torigian has connected on three out of six field goals. His long¬ est successful try a booming, end-over-end 55-yard field goal at Utah two weeks ago, tied a school record. As good as it is to have or share a school record, Torigian is quick to spread the glory around. He said that without Gary Osmundson the long snap¬ per, holder Brian Roberson and the blocking of the offensive line, he would not have been able to con¬ vert that field goal. "I got that record because of them," Torigian said. A former soccer stand out player, he switched to football be¬ cause he wanted to try something different. "All changes are good," Torigian said. He has been kicking since his sophomore year in high school. His transaction has been smooth. He said he has been able to hit field goals as far as 62 yards without a rush or scrimmage line. Usually, at the end of practice, with all the team chanting his name trying him to break his concentra¬ tion, he coolly connects on 55- y aiders. "It does not bother me," Torigian said. "They, are trying to distract me." He added that 100 players chanting his name does not even compare to having 35.000 fans screaming in the middle of a game. He added that they do that so he can get more focused on pressure situ¬ ations during the game. Sometimes, other football play¬ ers do not view the kicker as a mem¬ ber of the team. Torigian, however, does not let that bother him. "I know where they are coming from," Torigian said. "I consider myself part of the team. My job is to kick the ball- Most of the time, Torigian, along with fellow Johan Lyssand, spend most of practice by "themselves away from the other players work¬ ing on the fundamentals of kicking. Torigian said that watching his foot hit the ball, and having a good fol¬ low through are two important parts of kicking. Outside the field of practice, he spends a lot time in the weight room doing leg curls or squats to strengthen his kicking leg, Torigian said. The Bulldogs' last home game proved to be horrible for Torigian. He missed three field goals attempts — including a 52-yarder that was long enough but wide left. He had come in to the game perfect, 3 for. 3 in his previous attempts. "It was just a bad day. The crowd was upset about it," Torigian said. However, he took the bad perfor¬ mance more personally. "I let my team down . I did not carry my load." Despite the three misses, Sweeney said he will not replace Torigian this week. There were some positive things from Torigian on Satur¬ day night. '"Lam putting it be¬ hind me. learning not to do it again." As a result, this week Torigian said he will work harder at practice. "I will prac¬ tice some more...to get better. I am going to torture myself," Torigian said. "It is a work hard- get better week." Last year, he scored 19 points for the Fresno State offense. He converted 10 points after and nailed three field goals. W* Lj j% IFIED AD LINE 278-5731 ANNOUNCEMENTS Rich Republican God and Mike Eagles CEO.
