THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Friday, January 31,1997 Sports Sports Editor: Luis Hernandez Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Bulldogs win, Macklin comes back Women's Tennis Bulldogs women upset 19th ranked USC Fresno State upset 19th ranked USC on Wednesday. Jan.. 28. 5-4. at Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus. "It was a great team effort today." Fresno State head coach Irene Harris said. "Ev¬ eryone contributed." Wednesday's match was tied 4-4 heading into the third match in doubles. Fresno State sophomores Shana Peete and Terje Pallo were able to gel . past USC's Pam Trump-and Eva Jimenez. 8-5.to clinch to Bulldogs win. Pallo and Peete trailed 3-1 early, and went back ♦and forth with Jimenez and Trump taking control in the late going. "I think we played our best doubles of the season." said Pallo. "We stayed more aggresive and we were more confident. They didn't have the mental toughness we had." Fresno State (2-0) entered doubles down 4-2. but were able to pull off a sweep for the win. At number one. sophomore Dora Djilianova paired up with Kara Warkentin paired up to beat Ditta Huber and Nicole London. 8-5. At number two. junior Laura Townsendd and Liz Marpuri topped KaroJina "Baklarova and Verooika Safarova, 8-6. In Fresno State's prev ious two matches this sea¬ son it had been Warkentin and Townsend at number one. and Djilianova and Marpuri at number two. Those two doubles wins set the stage for Peete and Pallo's dramatic win at number three. "Our doubles came throught for us." Harris said. "They played tough at every spot." International Soccer Mexico's national side coming to Fresno Fresno State's Bulldog stadium will once again host top international soccer when Mexico's national side comes to town and takes on Guate¬ mala. It will be Mexico's last preparation match before they bagin their World Cup qualifying tournament. * The game is set for Wed.. Jerry Tarkanian. Fresno State's head coach, said. "They came in here short-handed and played hard." The Aztecs were without start¬ ing center Tye Fields (11.0 ppg. 3.9 rpg). who was declared academi¬ cally ineligible, and forward Jacobi Thompson (9.6 ppg and 3.6 rpg). who had started 13 games this sea¬ son. Fresno State took advantage of the Aztecs interior weakness. Daymond Forney had 21 points In 27 minutes, and Terrance Roberson added 17 first-half points as the Bulldogs ran out to a 46-21 half- time lead. "Well I think, number one. any¬ time we lose the people we lost, you don't know what the heck to do." said Fred Trenkle, Aztecs head coach. "When you're down 25 points at halftime. there's not a whole lot of incentive to play the second half." he added. Things started slowly for the Bulldogs, as San Diego State took an 8-5 lead early. But Tarkanian pulled center Rashaan Smith out of the lineup, and Khary Stanley used his size to punish the Aztecs. He grabbed six boards ant) blocked a shot in 14 minutes. "I appreciate getting all the minutes and I just wanted to come out and play as hard as I could." Stanley said. He also added five points to the Bulldgos' offense. v Danyell Macklin played in his first game as a Bulldog, and led the team with 10 rebounds in 19 min¬ utes of play. He looked rusty, throw¬ ing up two airballs. fumbling an alley-oop. and finishing 2-11 from the field. "I thought the first half we moved the ball very well." Tarkanian said. "And Terrance Roberson got hot and hit some big buckets. The thing I'm happiest about is that we got Danyell Macklin a lot of playing time." Forney added 14 points in the first half, most of them coming in the paint. '") 'That was a strong game for me. all the rest of the guys had a strong game too." he said. "I want to play against their best every night and they weren't there and we couldn't just slack off because of that." Despite the size advantage, the Aztecs out-rebounded Fresno State 21 -18 in the first half, and the teams were even at 42 for the game. "That's pretty frustrating, be¬ cause you know, a big team like we are. you always want to come out and pound a team on the boards." Stanley said. "We haven't been do¬ ing that, and that's something we need to do." Young hit three straight three- point shots in the second half, but otherwise both him and Herreri didn't have to shoulder the scoring burden. "I was focusing on getting Please see B-Ball page 11 Danyell Mackin team. But, apparently, even a 10-re- bound debut from forward Danyell Macklin in the Bulldogs 87-71 win over San Diego State did not fully expose the talents of the junior transfer. "Macklin had 10 rebounds?." said Head Coach Jerry Tarkanian. "He didn't even rebound like I know he can." Ask Macklin, and he will tell you he didn't do anything as well as he can. He was just happy to be playing competitive basketball again. "I'm still not in my groove." said Macklin. "I have a long way to go. I have been waiting two years, and like I told the guys tonight, it was a dream come true." Unfortunately, away from the boards, things were not quite so dreamy. Macklin made only two of his 11 field goal attempts, and by the time the game had ended jt was evident that his conditioning was . still very much incomplete. "He wanted to come out. but I didn't let him." said Tarkanian. 'That's what I was most happy with! that we were able to get Macklin some playing time. He is going to struggle for a while, but he has got to play." At one point it appeared that Tarkanian would leave Macklin in for all ofthe game's final ten min¬ utes. But. after a crowd-frenzying alley-oop from Chris Herren with 1:25 left in the game. After hosting Long Beach State the Bull¬ dogs will travel to Stanford the fol¬ lowing weekend to visit the num¬ ber one ranked Cardinal. "We have our hands full the first two series," said head coach Bob Bennett. The Bulldogs will begin the sea¬ son with a more talented and expe¬ rienced pitching staff than last year. The staff will be anchored by Olym¬ pian Jeff Weaver. Weaver is com¬ ing off a 12-5 season that earned him Ail-American Honors as a freshman. Left-handers Mark Parantala and Adam Pettyjohn will also return to help the pitching staff, as-will righty Kevin Fitzmaurice. Brad Tucker, who red-shirted last year due to an injury, will return this year and can be an important part of the staff. Tom Graham, a 6-7 freshmen from Beyer High, turned down playing for the Oakland Ath¬ letics after they selected him in the 4th round, and decided to come to Fresno State to play instead. He could be a dominating force for the Bulldogs. Joining Graham as new¬ comers on the staff are Casey Rowe from Bullard High, Hans Smith, a 6-9 freshman from Oregon, and junior college transfers Gabe Fos¬ ter and Kirk Griffin. "Starting out I would say pitch¬ ing is our strength," said Bennett. "This year we have got some vet¬ erans to start the year off. Last year we did not have any experience on the mound and it took us a half of a season to get going." The Bulldogs should not be lacking in the hitting department either. Outfielder Derek Feramisco and catcher Giuseppe Chiaramonte will return to lead the offensive at¬ tack. Junior college transfer Jason Decanio will help supply some power from the infield. Freshmen Chad Brown and Joe Gerber will , return and see playing time with Feramisco in the outfield. Outfield newcomers Mjke Williams. Keith Howard, Carlos Aukerman. Darren Dyt, Josh Hannah and Simon Tafoya are all considered great hit¬ ters. Tafoya may also see time pitching. Hannah can play the in¬ field also and "will start some¬ where," said Bennett. Rice, who is ranked as high as number ten in the nation, will give the Bulldogs their toughest compe¬ tition in the WAC. San Jose State and San Diego State will also be competitive. "We have a chance to have a real good ballchib," said * Bennett. "On paper we are good." However, Bennet knows that games aren't won or lost on paper.
