Timeout THE DAILY COLLEGIAN - Monday, January 27,1997 J. By Paul McCauley The Daily Collegian Wow! A brand new year to look forward to Yes. a full twelve months full of all the unexpected expectations of others to look for¬ ward to. Let's be honest.-some of the days wc give special attention to are pretty unusual Let's start with Valentine's Day, an entire day devoted to the desper¬ ate hope that you might be able to buy love. Or if not love, at least sex. I can think of nothing that better symbolizes most of today's rela¬ tionships than a bunch of over¬ priced, anemic roses that are des¬ tined to die within a week presented along with a garishly wrapped box filled with an assortment of choco¬ lates. And people think romance is dead, well at rate 1 certainly do. Following close behind is President's Day. A single holiday which used to be two separate holi¬ days. But since neither Washington's nor Lincoln's birth¬ days were able to capture the inter¬ est of the general population, they were combined into one. You can tell ij's not a real im¬ portant holiday because we cel¬ ebrate it on the closest Monday or Friday to the actual date *lt's sig¬ nificant only in providing a three day weekend. ^ I just find it strange that we go through all of this trouble to single out two dead presidents, but ignore the birthdays of any of our still liv¬ ing presidents. Apparently you don't become a memorable presi¬ dent until you die. Moving along we corne to one of the pseudo-holidays I actually enjoy. April Fool's Day. I don't know why I like it. but I think it has a lot to do with being a day de¬ voted to simply screwing with people's heads — a concept I can get behind without any reserva¬ tions. But that's just me and I am evil, and I like it that way. Wait, go back. I forgot all about Groundhog's Day. A silly little holi¬ day, but fun none the less. As if some furry little critter could actu¬ ally predict the length of the re¬ maining winter by looking for its shadow. If this actually worked, every news program across the na¬ tion would fire their weathermen and replace them with Groundhogs. It just goes to show that meteorolo¬ gists have been using unreliable methods for centuries, and some¬ how still seem to reproduce. Very scary. And to think that's just what's coming up in February, the short¬ est month of the year. It's just a little more than 1 can handle to think of the rest of the year fn a single sit¬ ting, or at least right now. I'm sure other holidays will be mockcxi as they come closer because that's just- the kind of guy I am*. The Daily Collegian
Wow! A brand new year to look
forward to Yes. a full twelve
months full of all the unexpected
expectations of others to look for¬
ward to. Let's be honest.-some of
the days wc give special attention
to are pretty unusual
Let's start with Valentine's Day,
an entire day devoted to the desper¬
ate hope that you might be able to
buy love. Or if not love, at least sex.
I can think of nothing that better
symbolizes most of today's rela¬
tionships than a bunch of over¬
priced, anemic roses that are des¬
tined to die within a week presented
along with a garishly wrapped box
filled with an assortment of choco¬
lates. And people think romance is
dead, well at rate 1 certainly do.
Following close behind is
President's Day. A single holiday
which used to be two separate holi¬
days. But since neither
Washington's nor Lincoln's birth¬
days were able to capture the inter¬
est of the general population, they
were combined into one.
You can tell ij's not a real im¬
portant holiday because we cel¬
ebrate it on the closest Monday or
Friday to the actual date *lt's sig¬
nificant only in providing a three
day weekend.
^ I just find it strange that we go
through all of this trouble to single
out two dead presidents, but ignore
the birthdays of any of our still liv¬
ing presidents. Apparently you
don't become a memorable presi¬
dent until you die.
Moving along we corne to one
of the pseudo-holidays I actually
enjoy. April Fool's Day. I don't
know why I like it. but I think it
has a lot to do with being a day de¬
voted to simply screwing with
people's heads — a concept I can
get behind without any reserva¬
tions. But that's just me and I am
evil, and I like it that way.
Wait, go back. I forgot all about
Groundhog's Day. A silly little holi¬
day, but fun none the less. As if
some furry little critter could actu¬
ally predict the length of the re¬
maining winter by looking for its
shadow. If this actually worked,
every news program across the na¬
tion would fire their weathermen
and replace them with Groundhogs.
It just goes to show that meteorolo¬
gists have been using unreliable
methods for centuries, and some¬
how still seem to reproduce. Very
scary.
And to think that's just what's
coming up in February, the short¬
est month of the year. It's just a little
more than 1 can handle to think of
the rest of the year fn a single sit¬
ting, or at least right now. I'm sure
other holidays will be mockcxi as
they come closer because that's just-
the kind of guy I am*.
