New Fresno State coach Dave Chesler was happy with the team's performance. "It's unrealistic to expect a blow out against a half¬ way decent team." he said. "We have practiced only nine days," said Fresno State midfielder Mario Sanchez. "We'are going to improve every week/' Chesler said. "We're tal¬ ented, and we're going to put our work in." Sanchez, who missed last sea¬ son after suffering a knee injury, was one of the few familiar faces for the Bulldogs. "It feels good to play again," he said. "Walking into the stadium was a good feeling." Fresno State's starting goal¬ keeper Jeff Fluhartyr one of the W**f Bulldogs' new faces in the line-up, must have had a bitter-sweet night. Fluharty, who had two saves in the match, was Sacramento State's goalkeeper last season. "I was nervous at the start of the game," he said. "After a while, I settled down." So much so. he shut down his former teammates to earn his first victory as a Bulldog keeper. The game was even throughout, with Fresno State having posses¬ sion of the ball most of the night. Both teams had chances to open the score but their finishing touch failed them. At the start of the second half, Fresno State enjoyed possession of the ball of the ball, pushing the Hornets' defense deep into their own half of the field. For the Bull¬ dogs, however, possession didn't . translate into scoring chances. The Hornets played a solid four men de¬ fensive wall that cleared Fresno State's advances. "I was surprised." said Sanchez of the Hornets' play. In fact. SacramentoState had the first chance to score in the second half when forward Sean Lockhart hit the crossbar with a powerful shot with 38 minutes left in regulation. Fresno State responded in its very next possession. They had three point blank shots at Duncan's goal, but failed to score. In the first half, Fresno State took seven shots to Sacramento State's two. Williams had a chance to open the score early in the game. "Williams walked in alone in the first five minutes, but the keeper pushed the ball over the crossbar," Chesler said. That was Fresno State's best opportunity to score in the first half. "We came out well in the first 15 minutes of the game, but didn't score." Sanchez said. "That gave Sacramento State confidence."
