So far this season just plain bad things have happened to the Fresno State Bulldogs when they have gone on the road. The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-1) have been completely dominated at Oklahoma State, let a game slip away from them at Oregon, and somewhere in between was Saturday's 28-16 loss to Hawaii (3- 2,1-2). "We have no excuses," said Head Coach Pat Hill. "We just got beat. We got out coached and out played." A sluggish Fresno State offense found no way to counter the Rain¬ bow defense which was stacking the line of scrimmage in an attempt to keep Michael Pittman and com¬ pany from dominating the game. Hill simply called it a "great scheme " The Bulldogs only had 40 yards passing in the first half and the rush¬ ing attack never got on track. Still, thanks to a blocked punt by tight end Scott Thompson that was re¬ turned for a touchdown by fresh¬ man Larry Deck, the Bulldogs re¬ ceived the second-half kickoff trail¬ ing just 14-10. Starting at their own 26-yard line, the Bulldogs drove 73 yards down io the 1-yard line of the Rain¬ bows. They were actually less than a yard away from regaining the lead, until quarterback Bill Volek was stuffed on a sneak attempt on fourth down. ''We drove to the goal line, and couldn't punch it in," said Hill. Backed up against their own goal line, the Rainbows promptly drove 99 yards on 16 plays and capped the drive with a Charles Tharp touchdown run to take a commanding 21-10 lead. Tharp, making just his second start of his career, had two touch¬ down runs and 143 yards rushing. And quarterback Dusty Skinner, who had produced exactly zero points in his only two starts of his career, played steadily and the Rainbows controlled most of the game. "Our guys clearly played hard tonight," said Hawaii coach Fred Von Appen. "We've been trying to strike a balance for the last month. And we definitely put on our best performance tonight." Any hopes of a comeback were crushed shortly after the Bulldogs regained possession after falling behind 21-10. Michael Pittman was contained as Hawaii beat the 'Dogs 28-16.
