Skipper, Williams, and all the TJogs hope to have the same success tonight at 6 p.m. against UNLV at Las Vegas. The game is covered by ESPN. Won't spot this reporter in Vegas Bulldog k tM'MWAM w f oM, 1 will not be making the trip to Las 'vegas. sports fans. And believe me, the reason is not because I don't want to go. To tell you theGod-awlul truth, there is nothing I'd rather do this evening than sit comfortably in the University of Nevada-Las Vegas press box, diligently enjoying reporting on the Fresno State Bulldogs. Since Las Vegas isn't exactly onthe other side of thc country or anything, I feel it's only fair to explain to you why I will not be in attendance at tonight's festivities, but instead forced to be stationed to my tube (thank goodness I have ESPN). - The first and main reason I won't be going is because I don't own an automobile, so driving there myself is definitely out of the question. Earlier on in the season, it was rumored that if Kevin Sweeney threw for enough yards in previous games to be within striking distance of Flutie's record in Las Vegas, the Sports Information office would send photographers to capture the climactic. moment when our home-grow n quarterback breaks ithc NCAA passing-yardage record. Granted, quarterback Kevin still stands 463 yards away from Mr. Flutie. but there still remains a very slim (thread-width) chance he could accom¬ plish this feat. But, that's not the point. It would be a marvelous opportunity for any student affiliated With FSU to visit Las Vegas. Rumors were still afloat as late as Monday (three days ago), that a van would go to Las Vegas with photographers and room to spare prematurely causing me to sing merrily "Las Vegas here I pome." I mean, this was exciting stuff. I've only been to Las Vegas once and that was briefly en route to L.A. This would be my first long trip away frorh FSU as The Collegians sports editor. My emotions were those of a youngster on his first camping trip. And Vegas. Wow. What an opportunity. The stars. The casinos. The shows. The nightlife. Who knows if I'd ever have made it to the football game? When 1 phoned the SID secretary Monday "just to verify a spot in the van," I anxiously dialed the seven digits..Faster than one can say "Sam-my Dav-is Jun-ior." I was informed that to tag along in our university's van would cost me. get this, (hold your breath). $50. That's fifty...fivc-/ero... dollars. Great pounds of gold. Batman! I told the gal I'd think it over (I didn't think very long). Fifty dollars. Do you know how many Big Macs that would buy? I rode in the familiar FSU van to the San Jose State game and it didn't cost me a bloody penny. Zippo. So after setting r$y heart on Vegas, a joyride to San Jose (at least on thc way up) woufd've turned into a horror ride (at least to my Ranking account) IF I had paid thc outrageous traveling fee. Let's not give the Sports Information crew a bad rap (that wouldn't be nice, now would it?). Our beloved Sports Information Director Scott Johnson told me that it would cost 41 cents a mile plus rent and insurance to use the university van. which * totalled roughly S450 for its use. All right, fine. I can accept that. Soon after, it was discovered that the van deal (or should we call it a bargain?) was cancelled. I wonder why? , The FSU cheerleaders will be flying there and djie to a cancellation, a sports information student helper will get to fly there to do...whatever he does. ' See BARK, page 7 ' \
