. 2F3cews Malaysian club stages convention By Tamara Toller Staff Writer CSUF will serve as headquarters for Malaysian students studying on the West Coast from Nov. 27 to 30. when the CSU F Malaysian Students Organization hosts 20 such student groups from Western colleges and universities. The conference will be a time to exchange ideas about studies, classes and cultural programs, according to Say Koh, a member of the Malaysian Students Organization. "The highlight is on Sunday," Koh said. The show will feature Malaysian C9*aWBe and dancing prepared and performed by members of the group. "The first purpose of the conference is to get all Malaysians from the West Coast together," Koh said. He also said it is intended to inform Americans of Malay¬ sia's location. There is a misconception among Americans of where Malaysia is, according to Koh. "They think it is in Europe and it is in Southeast Asia." he said. The Consul General of Malaysia, Hasral by Berke Breathed mi- MtuacmMwr &XMmiY Sani Majtabar, will attend the Sunday show. ->-^*** The Consul and his assistants are responsible for guiding the Malaysian people and solving problems, Koh said. They are.the go-between for West Coast Malaysians and the embassy in Washing¬ ton. D.C. The Malaysian Students Organization is looking to "kill two birds with one stone" with the weekend activities Associated Students Officers have been invited to see the support the M.S.O. receives from the Consul. "We also want the Consul/to see the support we receive from the A.S.,** Koh said*. A.S. President Bob Whalen said the M.S.O. "seems to be very organized." "When they come up for budgeting, they always have something to back up what they say." Whalen said. "Their programs have always been successful." Zahmir Ahmed, international students counselor and adviser to the M.S.O., agreed with Whalen that the club is very organized: He said the group had put a lot of time and effort into the show, which has become an M.S.O. tradition. The M.S.O. is the largest single organization from one country involved with the International Students Services and Programs office. Two hundred forty of the 1,000 international students at CSUF are from Malaysia. Koh said. Ahmed said the M.S.O. is not just putting on a song and dance show, but has decided to expose different parts of its culture as well. A simulated ceremony as well as medieval artifacts and samples of food will be on display. During the four-day conference, a soccer tournament will be held. Participating teams will be made op from the visiting student organizations.
