Former prof takes work to high seas By Randy Bridges Staff Writer Former CSUF Professor Donald Halper will take business practice and theory on the high seas next month as part of the Semester at Sea Program. Halper was selected to teach interna¬ tional business and marketing classes for the 100-day trip, leaving Nassau (the Caribbean) in January and ending in Seattle. Wash., in May. The semester at sea will happen aboard the S.S. Universe, where Halper will teach classes and supervise student activities. In addition, he is scheduled to guest lecture in various ports about international business and about life in the United States. Halper said the floating campus, spon¬ sored by the University of Pittsburgh, will feature approximately 60 courses from a variety of education fields. He will discuss various topics, such as bartering in other countries. "Many large-scale deals tale place with the bartering." he said. "The idea is to understand bartering systems and hear about them from the horse's mouth, so to speak.** Students will be assigned course-related trips and activities in each country. Halper said the tour will feature different countries than previous trips because of the oversea problem. "Last year in Alexandria (Egypt).- the hotel the students were going lo stay in was burned and gutted during a riot." ho said. On this trip, Yugoslavia and Russia have been added to the list, which is: Spain, Turkey, India, Malaysia, Philip¬ pines, China, Taiwan and Japan. "In Japan, well -jvisit the Matsushita plant (near Osaka) that makes Panasonic VCRs and electronic equipment." Halper said. "I'm also trying to line up a visit to Kentucky Fried Chicken there, and 1 want to visit the Nike shoe factory." ' Halper said more than 400 students from across America will bc on the excursion. The cost of the trip is about $10,000. with personal tours of thc countries costing more. "A trip to Beijing (China) will cost about $800 to $900 " .Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1986. I really don't know hov* well it will * work academically. "But in a sense, it's the ideal situation for learning or teaching. The ship is our home for the whole trip, but there will be no classes when we're in a port." he said. Halper said the program looked for instructors with experience in a particular area of the world. "I'm familiar with Asia. and I've delivered papers on Japanese business." He said applying lor the job "had been in the back of my mind, and I'm pleased they (Pittsburgh) wrote me back. I got the answer from the professor ofthe Semester at Sea organization."
