Continuing his domination of the Pac 10 Conference, All-American Fred "the Spider" LitUe claimed the 177-pound Pac-10 Championship, and helped the Fresno State wrestling team place fourth in the league championships, held Saturday and Sunday at the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. . Little, tha No. 5 177-pojunder in the nation, left a'trail of beaten and outclassed wrestlers, before culminating his appearance with a 9-0 thrashing of Arizona State's John Ginther for the championship. "I felt really, good out there. I've been working a lot harder this year, and I feel I wrestle better to my potential at 177 pounds (instead of ,167 lbs.). I think things are falling into place," said Little. Outscoring his opponents 36-5 in the tournament. Little demolished Utah State's Ted Castro 14-2, Oregon State's Erik Miller 6-0 and Fullerton Stele's Jose Flores 7-3, before his victory over die No.7-ranked Ginther. With the tournament victory under his belt, Litjle raised his record to 28-4 on the season. For his career. Little is now 25-0 against league competition, and now stands second on the Bulldog's all-time victory list wiuV97 career wins. It was his third league title in three years, but his first in the Pac-10 (the 'Dogs wrestled in the PCAA last year), and his first since he jumped this season from the 167-pound class to the 177-pound class. Little's first place finish also guarantees him a bid to the NCAA Championships, to be held March |9-21 at the University of Maryland, situated in College Park. Maryland. "I feel pretty good heading into nationals. I started running this week, and you can bet I'll be running the next two weeks. I hurt my shoulder in the tourney, but with therapy, in two weeks 111 be a fighting man." Little said. Also placing for FSU was John OBrien. The 190-pound senior, who was seeded No. 3 in his weight class, claimed second place when he was defeated in the championship match by Arizona State's Mike Davies, 7-3. O'Brien defeated Oregon's Joe Rissone • 7-4. and second- seeded Kurt Knetchel of Utah State 7-4. in route to the championship match. "I wrestled pretty well oveHU.T made a few mistakes in the final match, but it was a good weekend. It felt great to beat Knetchel, because he was a seed higher than me, and he beat me earlier in the year and made- me look pretty bad, so I was happy with the win." OBrien said. Holder of last year's 190-pound PCAA Championship. O'Brien went 2-1 during the tourney to raise his record to 23-8. and earn his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships. The top three finishers in each weight division received automatic NCAA bids. OBrien is looking forward to his trip to College Park. "When I went last year, 1 had confidence, but I didn't have the experience. Now. I know IVe got the experience to finish in the Top 8 and become an All-American." OBrien said. Junior Vince Walker also received an NCAA bid when he decisioned Oregon State's Steve Landen 8-2 to earn a third- place finish. Walker, a 167-pound JC All- American transfer from Garden City College in Kansas, went 3-1 during the championships to raise his record to 13- 11 on the season. At one point during the season. I was holding on to things that were hurting my wrestling. Being homesick, I guess, was die best way to say it. I tried to put it out of my head and concentrate more on wresding. Hopefully. I'm peaking at the right time. I'm just glad I'm going to nationals," Walker said. ' The only other Bulldog to receive an NCAA invitation was freshman Fred Hunziker. Hunziker. a 142-pounder. went 2-2 during the championships to cam a fourth-place finish, and was impressive in his 1-0 overtime loss .to All-American Scott Wiggin from Stanford. Hunziker's record inched up to 11-8-1, and with his wildcard invitation, he becomes the first freshman in Fresno State history to gain an NCAA bid. "I was just hoping I'd. get a wild card bid My only losses were to the, No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, so I thought I had a chance. It makes me feel really good. Hopefully, I'll have this feeling the next three years. too. I'll find out what it's all about die next couple of weeks," Hunziker said. Arizona State clinched the team championship as it ran away from die 'rest of the field, totalling 101.75 points, compared with 50.25 points for second place Utah Suite. SETBACK Continued from page 6 "We played ^aggr&sive defense together." said Hall. "Myy girl ( Menke- Wilson) would give it to Zina's girl (Martell) and Zina would play up in her face. (Martell is) a tough girl to defense and we didn't play her really well, but we played tough and (hat was the key to containing their backcourl." Hall and Harris also did a comendablc job of moving .the ball on offense, combining for 15 assists and' just four turnovers. "The hardest thing about running 4an offense against Fresno is keeping an eye on their guards," said Harris, "Their guards are quick and they'll steal the ball while you're directing your players to go somewhere so you have to watch thera and direct at the same time." "\ _/• With the FSU guards neutralized on both ends of the court, the load fell on the front line, and only forward Shannon McGee was up to the task. The 6-foot senior hit connected on 12 of 16 field goal attempts, and five of six free Wows en route to a game-high 29 points. Laurie Heinrichs # scored 14 points, but was not the dominating defensive force she's been for much of die season. The Rebels made their intrusions into the paint behind Heinrichs and the PCAA blocked-shots leader failed to reject a shot and establish herself as an intimidator. Fresno State, which fell to 22-8. will now have to set their sights on a second consecutive bid to the Women's National Invitational Tournament. Last season, the 'Dogs went 0-3 in the WNTT, finishing last in the eight-team field. BASEBALL Continued from page 6 Fresno State registered 15 more hits on Saturday and FSU starter John Salles ran his record to 5-1, pitching an eight-hitter and striking out nine *Zag batters, as Fresno State claimed the 8-3 win.. Although the hits again came in large quantities. FSU's mentor saw opportunities come then go. "We got umpteen hits, but just weren't able to take advantage of loo many of them." FSU stranded eight base runners. The hottest FSU stick on Saturday belonged to Steve Pearse, who banged out four hits in four at-bats, and also tallied a pair of RBIs. Goodwin and Bates belted three hits each, and Goodwin stole a pair of bases to move his team-leading total to 16. In Friday's opener, Dennis Springer, in not one of his dandiest outings, gave up six hits, fanned sue, but also walked six in lifting his record to 2-1, while going die entire distance. The 'Dogs, who bashed 16 hits, had six players crack two hits a piece. Shawn Gilbert led the high-powered attack with three hits and three RBIs. FSU had dropped behind 1-0. but Gilbert's double in the third together with Stewarts second homer of the year gave Fresno State all the runs they would need. Still, Gilbert drove in two more runs an inning later. And in the fifth, Brandon Mitchell's two-out RBI single extended the score to 5-2. Nexr on the 'Dogs' slate is a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday with Texas Christian at Beiden Field.
