rr~ ^Tuesday, April 28, 1987 ! Page 3 Terminal fear II! can be scared to death • By Lisa Kkn Bach Staff Writer Most of the terminally ill patients that Dr. Jeanne Achterberg works with are not dying of disease — they are dving of fear. "They are absolutely Scared to death." said Achterberg during a lecture about catastrophic illness Friday. Achterberg is the director of research in the Health Science Center at tile University of Texas and is also a psychology professor. Her lecture was sponsored by the CSUF Department of Psychology and the School of Health and Social Work. Achterberg dealt specifically with the role of imagery in healing. She published a book on the topic in 1985 and descibes it as "using a prepared mind to counter a feared event" Imagery is not just visualization, said Achterberg. "It's all those processes that go on in your head: feelings, thoughts and sensory events in the absence of the actual events. "It's really a sophisticated way of asking them (the patient) how they feel," she said. "Is there a relationship between the blood and psychological reactions?" asked Achterberg who added that research in the field has been going on for some time. "Can imagery be used as a therapy and does the physical response change with the mental image? There is no evidence, that will satisfy See FEAR, page 5 Farming students take stake in ag future at FFA field day can survive and don't charged on StarT Writer Approximately 1,600 high school students throughout California analyzed the quality of crops, animals and seeds during CSUFs 39th annual Future Farmers of America field day competition Friday and Saturday, according to Dr. Art Parham, agricultural professor. Dr. Harry Karle, assistant dean to the School of Agriculture and Home Economics, said these types of competitions are important because they "help younger people get on their own feet" The judges looked for pose, confidence, ability to express opinions, technical expertise and uniqueness in the thought process," Parham said. They have to give then- own reasons for the decisions they made," he said. Parham said having Vintage Days the same time as the FFA competition poses problems because it puts a strain on the facilities and manpower. "Ifs really incumbent for the Associated Students and the students to realize its importance and hopefully work out the conflicts with Vintage Days i detract from each other," he said, He said the future FFA competition schedule at CSUF is set until 2008 so it coincides with other FFA competitions, in the state, which limits their ability to accommodate Vintage Days. "These types of competi¬ tions ore important because they help younger people get on their own feet" —Dr. Harry KarU There were fewer problems this year than the last time the FFA competition and Vintage Days coincided, Parham said. "Vintage Days has helped and made compromises." he said. "I think the combination of the two events is for the recruiting of students." Parham said. "Held day has great for the university and we have to search for the resources to have the optimum situation involved." Another problem for the competition was with the Satellite College Union. This year, the SCU charged $600 for the use of its facility, which was used for the parlimcntary procedure contest Parham said. This is the first time we have been it and litis year, the AS. government gave us money to pay the bill" he said. "As long as the student government continues to pay, ifs no problem, but if it takes its money away, we would be in big trouble." James Aschwanden, an agricultural teacher at Gait High School. - said those participating in FFA learn by doing. This reinforces the skills they learned and apply it outside the classroom," he said. *~***\. Aschwanden said die agriculture crisis has hurt the activities o'. the FFA. "A lot of minds are set that agriculture is going though tough times," he said. "We must show there are still a lot of careers in ag." Arroyo Grande High School Jerome Brown-Suva competed in the vegetable judging contest Brown-Suva said he looks for size, firmness, consumer acceptability, and blemishes. He said it takes him five to 10 minutes to examine the crops, but must spend one to two hours a day, four days a week practicing. "It takes a lot of studying," he said. -. 1 the paper Ampersand a weekly entertainment section every Friday in The Daily Collegian , A S S i~f i e. d r-] AUTOMOBILES MISCELLANEOUS MISCELLANEOUS TYPING 71 TOYOTA LAND-CRUISER X-CondrtwrV $2,300 CaH after 7 port. 227-4*535 SUMMER IN EUROPE From $339.
