Collegian Sports California Stale University, Fresno 4= Wednesday, November 11,1987 <S Wrestlers kick off '87-88 campaign Early injuries limit squad's effectiveness The Fresno State wrestlers, currently suffering from injuries, will unofficially open competition tonight with the Red- Blue intrasquad match at 7:30 in the North Gym. FSU, which had a 12-9 dual record last season and finished fourth in the Pac-10, will return to action this year with five starters sitting out with injuries and one starteT coming back from an injury. The good news for the 'Dogs is that senior Allen Richburg is returning from a shoulder separation that forced him to redshirt all of last season. Richburg, who wrestles in the 158- pound class, has a 90-50-5 record in four seasons as a Bulldog. He needs 25 wins this year to break the FSU career record of 114 victories set by Mike Gallego in 1968. "If his shoulder holds up, hell be just fine," said FSU Coach Dennis DeLiddo of Richburg. "In fact, he thinks the shoulder which was operated on is now better than his good shoulder." The Bulldogs could use some healthy people coming back Tike Richburg. The five wrestlers who have been lost at least temporarily to injuries are all returning starters. They are Vince Walker in the 167- pound class, Darren Stevens at 118 pounds, Durbin Lloren at 150, Alonzo Harrison at 142 and Fred Hunziker at 134 — all of whom will miss tonight's intrasquad match. * Coach DeLiddo is understandably con¬ cerned over the situation. "We still don't know exactly who our squad will be when we open the season," he said. The 'Dogs will officially open their regular season this Friday when they travel to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly-SLO. One way for DeLiddo and the team to find out who will be in the lineup is tonight's match where the wrestlers in their respective weights will .square off. This could decide the starters for Friday night in San Luis Obispo. There might be some challenge Bulldog wrestler Alonzo Harrison qualified for the NCAA Championships In the 134-pound class last season. This year, though, Harrison will compete at 142 pounds. matches out there," said DeLiddo about determining his top wrestlers. "We have already been having them before prac¬ tice." Besides Richburg, there will be three previous lettermen in action tonight. They will be led by Hunziker and liar- compiled a 12-9 record and also qual¬ ified for the.NCAA Championships. Hunziker should be in the lineup for Friday's opener. Harrison, though, is questionable. With the return of Vince Walker from An American takes a look at the world's most popular sport risen, who Strangely enough are trading *■£ 8ur*ery> the'^ could wind up places ' with a very formidable squad. DeLiddo believes that if the 'Dogs can ON THE PROWL BY JIM PROULX For those of you who will be at¬ tending your first.soccer game when you go to watch Fresno State in the NCAA tournament this weekend, I offer you this American Guide to the Game of Soccer. Soccer is played on a football field with sort of a basketball court chalked on it. Eleven players on each side run around in shorts and polo shirts kicking at a volleyball. And nobody, but nobody, is allowed to use his hands. Except the goalie. You can tell who the goalie is easily, because while the rest of his team wears — say blue stripes — he will be fashionably clad in bright yellow. The point of soccer is to knock the volleyball intq a big net at one end of the field more times than the other guys. This is called scoring a goal. You can tell when a team's scored a goal because they all grab one guy and take him to the ground in what I assume is a gesture of affection. Scoring goals isn't all that easy, though, because the goalie stands in front of the net and uses himself (including his hands) to block the ball from rolling in. The goalie must be the laziest guy on the team because he just stands around most of the time while the other players run back and forth in the middle of the field kicking the ball around. Occasionally, somebody knocks it to See PROWL, page 7 survive the injuries up to January, they will be in a position to be challengers. "Right now, we've got to go with what we've got and hope to be healthy by December or January," he said, "If we can stay healthy, well be in good shape. I just hope we can have enough people to field a decent squad against San Luis Obispo." The 'Dogs' most prominent new¬ comer this year has to be 255-pqund heavyweight Paul Mirmingos, a trans¬ fer ' from Palomar Junior College. Mirmingos was the California JC state runner-up as a heavyweight last season. He is definitely a very welcome ad¬ dition to a 'Dogs squad that suffered in the heavyweight division last season, & giving up a pin, a technical fall or a forfeit in nine of their 21 matches last year. Golfers finish 11th in SF By Jon Matsune Sports Editor Fresno State's No. 7 golf team finished 11th out ofl6 teams in the University of San Francisco Invitational at the Olym¬ pic Club Tuesday. The Buildups, who were in 10th place with a 626 after Monday's second round, recorded a third-round score of 314 and ended up with a tourney total of 913. 4 Leading FSJJ was freshman Jimmy Artiach, whb was one of three 'Dogs making their collegiate debuts. Artiach, formerly of the Spanish National Team, fired a final round 77 (after a 77 and 76 in the first two rounds), compiled a 230 for the tourna¬ ment, and finished 13th in the individual standings. Sophomore Ron Ewing (80-79-77- 236) placed second on the Bulldog score- card And was followed by freshmen Geoffrey Griffin (83-75-79-237), Mark Waller (82-77-81-240) and Todd Spain (80-79-83-242) Of this group, only Ewing and Griffin entered the competition with collegiate experience. FSU Coach Mike Watney was dis¬ appointed with the team's performance as whole, but was pleased with the play of Artiach. ^_^^ "It was a poor tournament for us,"Jj^ said, 'But there was a bright spot. Jimmy Artiach firmly established himself as a member of the team. It was his* first tournament, and he was the No. 1 player on the team by a wide margin. "If anything good can come out of a bad tournament, it's the fact that we fouund we have a good player to join our lineup." No. 13 UCLA ran away with the tour¬ nament title by tallying a score of 882. The Bruins' closest competition came from Weber State, which finished 21 See GOLF, page 7 >
