Pag* Four Taped Series CCAA Underrated; 'Going Big Time?' Humbug-Coleman By John Armstrong, Collegian Sports Writer Cecil Coleman has gathered-ln some of the best football talent Id the state. His great 26-4 record could likely be a barometer for the future. Colesnan has. In the Fresno Slate College books, already become a champion among champions. The spirit of a coach Is reflected in hla ball players and from thst 36-6 bombardment of Bowling Green University In the Mercy Bowl, the FSC grid squad must be holding up a pretty polished The Bulldogs wfll hsve their hands full In conference action next year. Coleman talks on this point as well as the topic of "big time' football In the>,ccond or two taped Interviews. Is the CCAA a strong league? Coleman: That's a tough question to answer. "Strong" Is a relative thing. Strong as compared to the Big Five? The Big Ten? The Atlantic Coast Conference? CC Underrated Rather than answer It that way, I'll Just say that the CCAA Is very definitely underrated. Tbls conference seems to be getting stronger and stronger every year- What's behind the improvement? Coleman: Increased football programs. As an example, for the first time this year Long Beach Stato Is going with a highly acceler¬ ated scholarship program. As a result they have landed some really top-notch Junior college tronsfers. A couple of them could have played for any school ln the nation. In fact, I don't think there's a school In the league that hasn't Increased or Improved its football program In the past three or four years. There's no doubt in my mind that Fresno State plays in a real fine conference. Going Big Time, Big Business WIU Fresno State ever go "big time" In footbaU? Coleman: There's always a certain number of Individuals who yell, "Why don't wc play Notre Dame?" or "Why don't we play Ohio State?" WeU, what these people don't realise Is that there are a lot of things Involved in "big time" football. Right now wo play schools outside our league that have much better scholarship programs than we do. That's the thing wc would run Into every weekend If we were to go "big time." Before we could make a move like that our program would have to enlarge tremendously. And then there's the facilities needed. You've got to have a large seating capacity and fill it consistently to pay teams like Oklahoma and Michigan State the guarantees they can demand. And, or course, H you go "big time" the rest of your athletic program would suffer and certainly^that's all wrong. Not Interested Quite frankly. I'm not interested ln going "big time" at FSC. Is there a lot ot pressure to win big at Fresno Stato? Coleman: I've never felt that there was. Certainly this Is a problem at some schools across the country, but not here. Fve never been concerned about It and don't plan to. Our booster club has never at anytime come up to me and tried to tell me how to run the football program or who 1 should play. Our relationship has been perfect. Actually, I think the greatest pressure la the pressure a coach puts on himself. -The Ftwino Stole College CoUeglon- All Out Effort Will Bring Track Crown YOU CANT BEAT THE BEST — Coach larry Papo's talonled lop four golfer, hope to "bring home Ihe bacon" in this week's Los Angeles State Invitational. Lefty Ed Hlte then went the distance ln the second game allowing only three hits, walking Just three men, striking out seven while picking up a 3-1 win. MacDonald's win was perhaps Beiden's most gratifying because the big righthander has been plagued with a sore sbonlder since the season began.
