Agriculture Secretary Claims Sports Honors Ity DAN O'BRIEN Men, watch out! * Women are beginning' to dominate the sports world, too, and Fresno State College is no exception. Miss Tommie Slappey, agriculture department secretary, can lay claim to accomplishments in the sports world that very few males can top. Tommie is a pitcher for the Fresno Rockets, a nationally ranked woman's soft hall team. Htr accomplishments include playing on three Amateur Soft- hall Association World's Cham¬ pionship Tournament teams. Sin- hJmi In... They have !>.■. u rtmin'r--n|> on six occasions and heen rated In the top ten nation¬ ally for the last 1,1 years. Marathon Last summer Tommie and her II teammates traveled to Bridge¬ port. Connecticut for the tourna¬ ment. Tommie hurled a 20 Inn¬ ing. 3 hour and 25 minute mara¬ thon against Portland. Oregon. loelng 1-0. "That really shot us down." Tommli? said. "We were tired and lost the next game which elim¬ inated us from the tournament." Tommie had a 11-10 won-lost record last summer which she termed as a poor year for her and the Rocketts. In her eight years with the Fresno team, Tommie has com¬ piled better than a .500 won-lost percentage. The Rocketts league -The Fresno Stole College Collegian- is made up ot teams In the Los Angeles area and Phoenix. The Rocketts also play bene¬ fit games against all-star men's teams and as Tommie puts lt, "we give them a good battle." They have won some against the males but usually end up losing by close scores. Tthntnle says she can think ot no Iwtter way of keeping trim and healthy. "It fs my way ol relaxing anil letting down front everyday chore-," she continued. During the winter, she and the other players try to keep In shape by bowling or playing basketball. Tommie feels that women's sports programs should be built up more and recommends sports to any girl who wants to keep her youth.
