£pcrUtteat Third Man For Grid Classic Ity JACK McCLENEGHAN Collegian Sports Editor J. R. Williams' selection to the East-West Shrine Game In San Francisco on Dec. 29 represents a good omen. It breaks the "Ice" perhaps now -with northern California sports writers in looking toward this area Tor a Shrine game selection In the ruture. There have been only two other FSC men to make the classic. End Jack Bulkey and hallback Dale Messer were former choices. Williams X<W<i Help Although Williams li.nl in play outstanding ball U> make surh a team, he needed help. It's no **ecret an All-Amcrican must have some press clippings to make such a team, just as It is for any frltMer to make the East-West clnnnic. Prom the typewriters of FSCs Ed Piston, director of Information and printing and Rob Womack, assistant publicity director, came releases every week to various sections of California telling of the "legend of J. B." Bul perhaps more important than the releases were ihe wins of ihis year's team over San Jose State and the University or the Pacific. Williams was a standout in both contests, but he had to have the help or 32 other teammates for Fresno to win thosegatnes. San Jose. UOP Fnil To Place Tills year was the first time In tlie last decade that San Jose State and UOP did not put a man on the West squad. The Spartans and Tigers had seniors who were good enough to make the team, but neither school had a successful season. The Spartans won one game 1 gante schedule while the Tigera split the same It didn't help them either when the Ilulldogs took both gasnes for the third straight year. Williams Has Past Company Williams wilFbe In some fast company. All 2t men on the West team will take a shot at pro ball, but it la the "name stars" like Hugh Campbell (Washington State), All-America tackle Steve Bar¬ rett (Oregon), Sonny Glbba (TCU), Charlie Mitchell (Washington), Kermlt Alexander (UCLA) and Bill "Thunder" Thornton (Nebraska) who add glamour to the team. \ You can be sure that all the Central Valley will be glued to their TV sets when the public address announcer says—"From Fresno State College, number G4, J. R. Williams . . ." Next year Cece Coleman's football team will meet six non-confer- ence toes. These teams are: Idaho, Montana State, Adams State, UOP, San Jose State, and Abilene Christian. The schedule ls the toughest one yet to test a Fresno eleven, but In 1964 tbe Bulldogs will meet South Dakota State. Montana State, Hawaii, UOP and San Jose State. There Is an open date on Oct. 10 yet to fill, but word has It that Director of Athletics Hal Beatty Is negotiating a game with Utah State or Brigham Toung. And If you want to look further at the 1965 schedule, tho Bulldogs open with tbe University of Colorado. Oh me. oh my .. . CongntulBtlooa go out to quarterback Jon Anabo, guards Bill L-anghlln, Hike Slack) and center J. B. Williams. AnrJio *«i tlio "KoU Valuable Back Award" while lauighlln was choaeo "Moat Valuable Lineman" at the Varsity Lettcnnan'a Award* Banquet Friday evening. Williams won tbe "Defenatve Lineman Trophy" and Slagle won "Ilie MOM InspirmUonml Flayer Award." The honors were given out by Joe Dale St., Dr. H. M. Qlnaburg and Harvey Burnett.
