WAJMItl SAT 9-12NOON *^""Jf.l^,* Prince: Biting the purple banana As "de-elevator" music climbs through a brilliant mist of purple, the silhouette of a little stallion-man armed with guitar materializes on the big screen, "Dearly beloved, we're gathered here today to get through this thing called life." This is a rock-and-roll marriage of idol and audi¬ ence. Prince (Rogers Nelson) steals the bride and pulpit with "Purple Rain." "Purple Rain" is a movie -with pheno¬ menal drive. The scenes are fast and the storyline is fluid. This film is over before you know it. "Purple Rain" is also an extraordinary achievement considering the skimpy $7 million budget director Albert Magnoli had to work with. The combination of rock-concert real¬ ism and implicit biographical drama about Prince worked to make a captivating movie. Prince plays the Kid, the leader of a band now known as the Revolution, whose members share George Washing¬ ton's taste for clothes. The Kid conducts his Revolution at the First Avenue and 7th Entry Club, bands competing with two rival bands for a solid gig. The rivalry between Morris Day, lead man for the Time, and the Kid over the audience of "nasty girl," Appolonia is a comical music-boxing match. "What's it gonna be7" croons the Kid, bringing tears to Appolonia's eyes. Appoloma's fascination with the Kid's mesmerizing beauty is not unlike that of Prince's entranced audience. Prince has a powerful spell on his racially diverse followers. Prince is presented as a suburbian kid struggling to resolve violent family con¬ flict* largely due to the social hardships of ' an interracial marriage. His father, once a musician of considerable local fame, is now an embittered alcoholic. His mother is seldom around. The violence at home is frighteningly real. The Kid is left alone in his fantasy world of unicorns, puppets, and most important of all, music. His music is a means of expressing alienation. The audience has no problem identifying with the Kid. So if you want to get drenched in the purple rain, go ahead. Mon-Fri 9-7 aft ^aam Sat. 8-8 j amt\W^.
