S The Daily Collegian Sports Bulldogs sparkle in triple-overtime win Scott Barnes fouled out. Jos Kuipers fouled out. Fred Emerson fouled out. In the end it came down to steady senior Mitch Arnold. The Fresno State guard showed last night in Selland Arena that he was not ready for his season to end, as Arnold scored 16 second half points to lead the Bulldogs to a 79-76, triple-overtime victory over the Broncos of Santa Clara University in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. "1 don't think IVe ever coached anyone I thought could play with pressure better than Mitch Arnold," said Fresno State head coach Boyd Grant of the Bulldog senior."I have coached better athletes, but I don't think IVe ever coached anyone that could make the (teal at the right time, or get the pass where it should be at the right time, or make the clutch shot at the right time." Arnold truly was the clutch player of the night as the FSU senior kept the Bulldogs in the game with his outside shooting, defensive play and his re¬ bounding. The Bulldog guard finished with 18 points, five rebounds and a game- high four steals. Backup center Mark Guslin iced ihe victory with a pair of free throws with just three seconds left on the clock, but it was Arnold who gave the Bulldogs their final lead, 77-76, when he buried a 16-footer off of a missed Brian Salone shot. The game was closely matched as the lead changed 15 times, with the Bulldogs and the Broncos battling to 12 ties. Both' teams took large leads at different points of the contest, but neither club held it for very long. Other Bulldog scorers included Barnes who finished with a team high 21 points, and Kuipers netted ten points along with Brian Salone. Marvin Carter finished with eight, Strain added six, while Emerson finished with four points. Good friends won't leave you flat. The Bulldogs shot well for the ballgame, making 33 of 61 shots for a fine shooting percentage of 54-percent. Santa Clara was almost as perfect, as the Broncos shot 52- percent from the field, making 26 of SO Rebounding was close as FSU snared 30 boards while the Broncos came down with 31. Turnovers were another problem for both clubs as FSU lost the ball 11 times, while the Broncos turned it over 14 The game started out poorly for Fresno State, as tbe Broncos threatened to blow the Bulldogs off the court in the first few minutes of the game. Santa Clara did not miss a shot in building an early 15-2 advantage, and it appeared that Fresno State did not have a player that could shut down the Broncos 7-"center Nick Vanos. The Bronco senior was devastating inside, as he made an easy layup over the out¬ stretched hands of FSU center Fred Emerson to start out the game, then stuffed Emerson's slam-dunk attempt in tht Bulldog tr Both Vanos and guard Harold Keeling finished the night with 24 point outputs. Keeling scored an instrumental six points in the Bronco 15-2 run, and the Bulldogs couldn't seem to handle Vanos or the Santa Clara fast-break. But after a timeout called by Grant with 17:22 remaining in the first half, the Bulldogs settled down and seemed to recapture the sparking ir ' the last few FSU c< The Bulldogs put on a 15-4 spurt of behind the shooting of Scott Barnes to pull within two at 19-17, but Fresno State would not take a lead until Barnes hit a 12-foot bank shot with 1:42 remaining in the first half for a 25-24 advantage.
