"This is incredibly naive and produces errone- Dundes said both Carl Jung and Freud have tried to determine where these folk¬ tales and "fantasies"came from. Jung said these tales are pre-culturally inherited. He said humans are born with them, much like body organs. Dundes said in Jung's attempts to prove his research, he had no worldwide evidence, making it "absolute "This symbolism is explicit in folktales." — Dundes Freud, on the other hand, believed these tales appear instinctively, that they are part of a philo-genetic endowment. Dundes said Freud originally thought of folklore wayol ing mil "Folklore can help you understand psy¬ chology because folklore is people's fanta¬ sies," Dundes said. Dundes explained a study done by Freud and a Viennese mythologist named Oppenheim about dreams and folklore. Folktales in which there were dreams were studied and the dreams were interpre- r by t young children relate bowel i with the birth of a baby. Dundes said even in speech, especially slang expressions, this symbolism is seen. "Money and feces, are symbolically related. What do you call someone who has a lot of money? Filthy rich, rolling in it money up.... You dont have to be a Freu¬ dian to figure this out,"he said. "Even our military has an expression for payday — the day the eagle shits." Dundes also showed this symbolism in the lunar landing. Apollo, the Sun God in mythology, had a brother/ sister relation¬ ship with the moon.
