You are either a heavyweight champ ala tbe Who or the Stone* or you are an obscurity working the oldie* circuit trying to hold on for lhat on* last ihot at succeu. Manfred Mann, however, 1* one performer who haa found that middle ground. After couple of hot tingles to the mio- tlxtlei ("Do-Wah-Dlddy," "Mighty Quln"), Mann settled down to the early 70* to form one of rock'* most underrated band*, the Earth Band. , Early to hi* career, Mann was most (uccessful Interpreting the works of Dylan and laying them down to mainstream hard work. Today, the veteran keyboarder 1* venturing into sounds previously reserved for groups Uke Supertrsmp and Yes. There Is one noticeable difference though, and that is that the Earth Band rock* more often and Mann'a laat releaae. The Roaring Silence, la a Utty or¬ chestral experience that Includes two lUndout cuU, "Blinded by the Light," and "Waller, There'a a Yawn in My Ear." "Blinded by the Light" it the Bruce Springsteen cover that has shot up the pop charts to recent weeks. "Walter..." U an ex¬ tended instrumental that hails Mann'a place as the king of rock keyboardists now thst Deep Purple's dltbandment hat aidellned Jon Lord. In fact, "Waiter..." brings to mind Lord's classic organ In¬ strumental "Mandrake Root.'" The album has much more to offer including some really clean sustained guitar riffs by Dave Flett. The production (by Mann) la first rate amfHhe mix 1* super ThU is not to *ay that the album U not without flaws. The choir, featured extensively on "Singing the Dolphin Through," detracts at much aa it add*, and side two, though good, contains no one ouuunding piece. Anyone that likes Supertramp should not wait for another Tramp releaae of life's belt pleasures. Rather they should go get their hand* on a copy of The Roaring Silence. The Pousette-Dart Band is a MOR country-rock group that ha* two album* out on the Capital label. The latest releaae, Amnesia, brings to focus the problems of this potentially tight group. Tbe chief drawback is the tongwriting of group leader Jon Pou»ette-D»rt. Dart, like many in the MOR field, ia suffering from a near-terminal case of numbing sameness "-■ Only one song really sUnda out. "County Line" la a pleasant near-country number that might break through on Top 40 stations. The Pousette-Dart Band la not with obvious ulent, it is Just that it it mil-directed.
