8 TUB DAILY COLLBOtAN Thursday, January 9, 1969 James L Melikian, In the 'Doghouse FSC wrestlers entertain tough Long Beach tonight If any of you so called Fresno SUte College sports fans attended the basketball contesU last weekend, you saw a master at his trade. The master being none other than Don Ross. Now If that name escapes you, don't fret, because he never has been as popular as the Beatles or as famous as Moose (The Battiin' Bulldog). The portly Ross has the Important task of being a basketball referee. Although he makes $35 or so a game, sometimes you hardly wonder If your job ts worth the money when you are booed even before the contest begins. Ross, better known to FSC fans as Don Rlckles, Is a perfectionist at his work. How he ever got stuck officiating a game ln Fresno Is beyond imagination. You see^Ross Is an excellent official, In fact so good that he regularly officiates games ln the Pacific Eight Conference, which includes such Institutions as UCLA, USC, Stan¬ ford and California. One of Rlckles'-check that-Ross'better known claims to fame U a technical that he called on mild-manner¬ ed, well-respected coach John Wooden, Mr. Basketball at UCLA. This no-no on Wooden was the only one that the successful coach has personally had whistled on him In the last decade. The life of an official Is not an easy one. There are constant fouls that second-guessing grandstand coaches will call. But let's face It, the officials are right on the play and they only have one sel of eyes apiece. It they did call every foul, the whole ball game would be played at the foul lines. The short-haired Ross Is always on the move once a game starts. Spreading 200 pounds over a six foot frame, he Is quite agile for a man of his size. He also is quite relaxed and has a good sense of humor, which is unusual for a referee on the court. I bring this up after viewing the Friday night Cal State Los An¬ geles skirmish. LA'S Rayburn Walker, a smiling, happy-go-lucky athlete, was told that he hadajumpball with a member of the Fresno team. Impulse must have taken over Walker because before the jump he gently patted Ross on the fanny, to the crowd's delight. The official could have thrown Walker out of the game, but Instead Just smiled and went along with everything. ■* This brings up another spectrum. If there was a possibility of giving the coveted Dog of The Week award, both would have tied unanimously for their comedy on Ihe court. Unfortunately rules are rules and the award must go to someone associated with FSC. Head football coach Darryl Rogers Is the recipient of this week's award for his Chris Schenkel-style play by play action of Saturday night's game. You're on Ihe ball (get II?) coach, but you better stick to coaching football before you put all of the game's great an¬ nouncers ln the unemployment lines. This Friday the canines will battle Ihe pri'-season basketball favorite, Cal State Long Beach In the harlior city. Long Beach Is a good shooting, dribbling, passing and rebounding team. They are well coached under the direction of Jerry-Tarkanlan. Turk, Is a graduate i of FSC, coached high school basketball locallv at San Joaquin Memorial, and Is an astute student of the game. In his last three years of coaching at junior college his teams won the slate champ¬ ionship two times and placed second the other time. The oddity about Tarkanlan Is lhat he could be coaching here. Several years ago when state was looking for a basketball coach, he applied. He was told that his services were not wanted. Some people claim the reason he was not hired was because he was a FSC grad. Well anyway, that doesn't matter since the 'Dogs have a pearl ln Ed Gregory. One quality that makes Tark successful Is his recruiting. At this he Is a mastermind. A prime example is Sam Robinson, whe Is third ln the California Collegiate Athletic Association Individual scoring with an 18 point average In 13 games. Robinson, a Los Angeles prep phenom, approached Tark. then the basketball coach at Pasadena City College. Jerry liked what he saw In Robinson In return burnt up the state junior college basketball league, leading his team to one State Championship and one second-place finish in addition to being named JC All-American. Naturally Sam went to the four year Institution where Ms coach went after Tarkanlan made Ihe switch from Pasadena. Say your prayers 'Dogs, but just remember what the great philosopher Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones once said, "You After tying Chlco SUU and defeating San Jose SUte Just ..(Prior to Christmas vacation, MVresno SUte's wrestling team rHlunur Uraction tomorrow night here against powerful CCAA foe Cal SUte Long Beach. Coach Dick Francis says his Bulldogs are as ready as they'll ever be for a veteran 49er squad that has four CCAA placewln- "We're a pretty strong team right now," he commented. The 49ers also lead ln field goal percentage with .493 and field goal defense with only .372 shot against them. Is there any wonder why they are 12-1 and on top of the con¬ ference standings?
