Editorial 'A good newspaper is a nation talking to itself if Arthur Miller was right, if "a good news paper Is a "a"0" lading to itself," then a good campus newspaper is a campus talking to itself. The pages of "The Daily Collegian" are open to all members of the campus communlty--students and teachers, secretaries and janitors, administrators and "admlnlstratees." Beginning Mon., Feb. 6, we will be printing on a regualr basis a special magazine supplement, tentatively called "Issues will attempt to examine the role of tbe university in this society. •Does academic research benefit the society as a whole, or only the jarticular Industry or government organization sponsoring the re- •How much say should students have in determining their educational experience0 •What form does and should collective bargaining take In this university? •Title IX: Can there be equal opportunity without equal funding'' •What will the long range effect of the Bakke decision on minority education'' The above are only a few of the "Issues" we hope to examine in our first "mini-magazine." We're going to need your input. A dialogue only exists if there Is more than one voice. We need to know what your concerns are and how you feel about "A good newspaper Is a nation talk- Our eventual goal Is to make The Daily Collegian truly a daily newspaper. Our title change reflects this optimism. Each issue of The Dally Collegian is the result of approximately 180 man- and woman-hours of labor. To many of the staff, working on this paper is virtually a full-time Job. Despite-these efforts, however, there is much that If desired, regular contributors c stringers will be given credit in 01 staff box. Anonymity can also- be a: Our stale Having struggled from a dally to twice-a-week status, we have recently undergone a period of consolidation. Now we're ready to grow again. This newspaper is returning to the thrice-weekly publication schedule last semester's staff valiently attempted last semester, but had to abandon due to a personnel shortage. To aid us in this endeavor, we are utilizing previously "surplus" advertising revenues to purchase new equipment and hire addition- The Daily Collegian staff needs HELP!- Ws> have openings for thro* full-timo reporter*. (Futl-timort write at loast one story an isiuo and work on k, production on* evening per week.)We olsol have openings for two photographers, on* of whom may be Photo editor. The above positions are salaried ones (but if you are after the money, you'd do better in politics or real estate). We also need volunteers, lookinglor experience. Our office space Is rented from the university. Staff members receive no college credit for their Involvement with the newspaper. However, staff members are paid stipends In the form of salaries The editor of "The Dally Collegian" is selected by the CSUF Media Council prior to the beginning of each semester. The editor of Tbe Dally Collegian is also responsible for supervising the editors of the two monthly minority editions, Uhuru and La Vol, both of- whom are also selected by the Media Council, and who then choose their respective staffs. occurs on campus that goes unreported-- perhaps because there are at least a thousand members of the CSUF campus community for every reporter we have available. You can help by becoming a "source" or contributor* Sources are people who supply the newspaper staff with information, usually about some area of the campus'they are familiar with (e.g., someone in the Linguistics Dept. who "leaks" us information about upcoming/ past events). Contributors are just that: people who contribute articles, in be "leaked" to us in person (see map), in writing, or by calling us at ext. 2487 or 2486 (off- campus, dial 487-2487). We would be particularly pleased if information provided us Included the "five W's and the H" of Journalism: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How.
