I bet on sports. Not to prove a point and certainly not to earn a living. There axe two reasons why. One w that lt*r fnnr Tbr other--and I know I'm going to catch h*ll for this one—1* that, done right, betting on sport* is extremely educational. Since we've come to CSUF to learn, today we'll examine the educational value of sport* betting. Just like studying biology, sociology or bualnesl law, there are texts for sports gambling. My favorites are: Channel 47*s Dick Drilling (although Drilling lost a few points when hi* late report totally neglected the 1977 Valley High School Baseball playoffs on the eve of the championship game); the L.A. Times; the Fresno Bee; the California Angels pre-gama show; and Howard ComH, Pour over those text* whenever possible and gather.the facts, r orrh your own opinions (base them only on facUl) Opinion* are a necessity when betting. Place, your bet*. Now there's nothing educational li you make one or two bets a week. The key Is to bet, bet, bet. Last football season, a friend and I developed a system for betting on NFL games. There areM games a week. On Wednesday we grab the Vegas or Reno odds from the paper. Then we each look over the odds and secretly write rn picket. I against tl on game-rand teams, you will probably pay more attention to these games. You may even find yourself pulling for a team you couldnl stand th* week before. By betting on games you couldn't care less about, the money at stake will keep you Interested In the progress of certain players on the team. You will be surprised when you realize how much you learn through the course of the Of l e 14, I imes where we disagree, so we bet two dollars on each one. There are eight games left. Since we want the same teams In all eight, we flip for first choice and alternate picks until they're gone. Since we both get stuck with teams we don't want, we only bet one Now I know what you're saying. Normally any amart person wouldn't bet against the team he thinks will win. And in half of the previously mentioned eight games, each person is doing Just thing that happened a couple of months back. The Pirates were hosting the Dodgers. So a friend and I decided to employ our newest wagering system, called the Better Batter Betting Game. Each person picks a player. I chose Rennle Stennett and my friend chose Reggie Smith. We bet two dollars. Tbe games goes like this. Each batter accumulates points. He gets three points for a single, six for any extra-base hit, two for a sacrifice, and one for a walk, or being hit by a pitch. In addition, a batter loses a point for every man he leaves in scoring position (except when sacrifldng or being hit). After we bet, I waa sick to hear that Rennle Stennett was a Bowling leagues The College Union is offering two additional bowling league* this year. One Is tbe Junior league, open to student, faculty and staff offspring under the age of 19, which bowl* Saturday mornings beginning Sept. 17. The other Is the mixed Tahoe league, open to „ students, staff and faculty, which bowls Sunday nights at 7 p.m. For complete details, call the Union recreation area at 487- lifetime .1 Dodgers. (Lucky f Stennett had a hot night and I won the bet 11 to 3). To be sure, I'll never bet onStenhett against L.A. again. This betting game Is especially fun when the game la meaningless. But these games can be dangerous to your financial situation If you're not careful. Laat football season I had been knocking Redskin Quarterback Billy Kilmer for hla lame duck passes, and George Allen tor not playing Joe Thelsmann. Th* Friday before Washington played the 49ers, I heard that my man Jo* wa* going to start. Throwing all objectivity out the door, and not thinking before I spoke, I told a friend that Thelsmann would put 24 points on the board, (The 49*'rs were at the peak of their season with tie best pass defense In the league.) And ■ I even gave oddsl Needless to say, be Jumped at It. I must have been nuts. WeU, the 49ers secondary—worst In the NFL (opinion)—didn't let me down, and neither did Thelsmann. Washington scored exactly 24 points and JoeThelfmannhadhls b**t day a* a pro. The whole Incident *trengthened my convictions, and taught me to be more objective with money at stake. The best thing to do is let your Imagination run wild. You can bet on almost anything.
