—The Fresno State College Colleak EDITORIALLY SPEAKING Student Council Praised The student council is to be commended for doing away with a wholly undemocratic, although traditional, practice of reserving sections for organirutions. Such a tradition isj not good for student body goodwill or school spirit. Rei less of how well such a plan is attended or not attended is irrelevant. The basic problem is that of discrimination. It is well known, for example, that although the secti were open for reservation by both greek orgs and non-gr groups, the greeks are the only ones with one exception take advantage of the opportunity. Most non-greek bodies too specialized and their membership is too loosely organized in respect to gem-nil student activities for them to participate in such a plan. Thus, there is automatic discrimination. It is not the fault of the fraternities or sororities. It is the fault of the very nature of things. The plan was democratically unworkable and so the student council repudiated it. The editor docs not believe the Rally Committee should be blamed for this unfortunate situation either. The rally- men were pretty much caught in the middle of things. They were requested to enforce a ruling completely unacceptable! to the majority of the students. They were met by dissension and. many times, by outright rebellion. Students were turned out of the rooting section merely because they did not belong to a fraternity or sorority and the small unreserved areas were filled. Is this right? Is this the way to create school spirit and unity? It is not. Students are at Fresno State College to learn, among other things, to work together. They are here to learn to| work together in a democratic competitive society. No organization or group of organizations should be given privileges others cannot have merely because they sponsor good works | on campus. Let us face it, everything accomplished at FSC is the result of individuals working together. There are good workers in the greek societies as well as in other organiz- This editor feels that any student has a perfect right to sit in the FSC rooting section and show that he has school spirit by cheering for his team and participating it card tricks. As for the wearing of white shirts which the council aIso| recommended not to be a requirement, the rooting se certainly looks good all in white. But then no one want entire rooting section to catch cold. Perhaps, in the nar good appearance, students who want to sit in the rooting] section, could make a special effort to wear white sweatei and jackets of their own free will. , You know, basically, that is the problem: To get the stt dents to do things without having to be told to. The fewi restrictions the better. Student council, last night, in sense, took a big burden off of the greeks and put it squarely into the laps of the general student body where it belongs. Women's Service Group To Select New Members Four Knights Save Day The Four Knights put on a terrific show at the Wednesday- night personal appearance-rally. The Collegian editors think the employment of those four great performers was the best thing the rally committee has done this year. The whole show was highly successful and we wish to congratulate Francis Azimi, Rally Committee chairman, for getting them But we do hope, for the sake of the students pocketbooks, next time good student talent can be procured and phasis can be placed upon the football game to be played. Cannot someone convince the FSC Bulldogs and their coaches | to be on hand to help put the rallys over. The student body- Id like to hear from "their stalwart football warriors." One unfortunate aspect should be mentioned however, without harping on it; that is, it is too bad- more students j did not attend. The Rally Committee paid $250 to get the • Four Knights. They lost ?85 on the deal because of poor attendance. )t question, why is it fraternities have been able] to get the Four knights to attend parties at their houses] gratis?
