But we stlU are not utlllzing th* Black potential to its fullest extent. Thar* ar* far too many heavy brothers and sisters In the ghettoes who Just keep living from day to day. Our heritage, our beauty apply to all Black women and men. <•— enough to supply Black people with enough of the knowledge we n, to know about ourselves. The Black studies department should be bigger; there should be a degree offered In Black Studies here at this campus and every college campus on the face of this earth. should be Implemented to Its fullest, starting I don't need to tell anybody bow beautiful mack people axe - U'a In our blood. But the average Black person doesn't know that much about himself: hi* feature* and what African tribe Ira's linked to, African dances both social and ritual, languages spoken by the different African nation*. This process is undertaken by a representative committee composed of students, faculty and administrative personnel. In the past, this committee has consisted of approximately seven members. The task ot th* committee la to evaluate each applicant on the bail* of pre-established criteria a* follows: Each applicant I* required to submit a personal statement (or autobiography), a school recommendation, a community recom- In addition, th* candidate must submit a financial aid application which, when completed, will determine the economic status of th* Individual. This testing system la employed by most of th* state colleges and universities, and la considered by some to be an inadequate method. However, It appaara that th* present method ha* proven to be the most equitable for all concerned. Whenever practical, somecol- leges establish a system of per- dldate In an attempt to batter evaluate the potential of the applicant to. succeed at the college level, personal Interviews, however, are oftentimes Impractical for many candidates In term* of distance and cost. . After the committee has completed review of all the potential candidates, the desired number of admlttees are chosen and a list of recommended students is submitted to the college admissions office for approval.
