When it came to solid pitching, sophomore John Hoover struck out 11 batters' in his complete game win over Nevada- Las yegas to open FSU s action. As far as timely hitting was concerned, freshman third baseman Joey Xavier and pretty much the Bulldog bench came through. Xavier hit .389 over the four games TSU played and turned in some fine defense for the Bulldogs. Xavier was named to the all- tournament team at third and was also tabbed as the most valuable player. He had a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Fresno a 3-2 win over Long Beach State. * The win over the 49ers allowed the Bulldog to clinch the tournament before it actually ended. As it turned out, the game last Friday night was the last. Rain forced cancellation of games Saturday and even Sunday. The tournament committee ultimately called off the rest of the tourney, declaring Fresno Slate the winner. Outfielder Terry Pendleton, pitcher Kurt Walker and catcher Rob Geels were also all-tournament selections announced yesterday. Walker was also named the tourney's outstanding pitcher for his four- hit, seven strikeout win over South west- n Louisiana Friday. N e ada-La Vega baseman/catcher Frank DeSantis. LBS second baseman Steve Moore, LBS shortstop Bob Wesley, UNI.V outfielder Jon Maldonado. USL outfielder Mike Watson, Long Beach designated hitter Tony Laurenzi and USL pitcher Robert Dunphy comprised the rest of the all- tourney squad. Watson was the outstanding hitter, according to the tournament committee. The committee's Bulldog Award went to Hoover of Fresno Stale. ■ Watson burned up the tourney by batting . 727 for Southwestern Louisiana, but Maldonado banged out 11 hits in hitting .478. Maldonado's 11 hits equalled the tourney record for hits, held by former Bulldogs Ron Johnson, who was the first baseman for the Minnesota Twins for a while, and Dan Gladden, now in the San Francisco Giants organization, and Ron Hudson of Portland State, all set in 1978. Hoover tied former Bulldog Steve Wit- cos with his 11 strikeouts. Wilcox set the Dave Sevenn of LBS and UNl.V's Chris Smith each belted two home runs in Hoover had nine of 11 strikeouts in the first four innings, including three in the first. But after the fourth, the young hurler appeared to struggle. *l lost a little bit of my rhythm after the fifth inning,* Hoover said. 'I was getting the ball up a little bit." Hoover surrendered back-to-back singles to UNl.V's Alan Uughlin and Maldonado before walking DeSantis. The Rebels scratched for a run and then added one more in the seventh. Nevada also threatened the other frames, stranding a total of seven runners from the fifth on. But Hoover had bat support from his teammates. Fresno rallied for two runs in the first and added on in the second. As it turned out. it was all the 'Dogs would need. FSU got an insurance tally in the ninth when Rebel pitcher Bob Korden- brock walked Geels with the bases loaded to force in a run. "It was important for us to get the complete game in a tournament like this," Bulldog head coach Bob Bennett said. "We might get in a sitation where we might need three or four pitchers and we want to keep them fresh." Hoover has struggled off-and-on this season but has not let the string of bad luck get him down. Hoover, a product of Fresno High School, has thrown well all season, with only a couple of exceptions. The problem has often been simply the lack of offense behind him. That corrected when Nevada-Reno was in town recently and the 'Dogs have Hoover an 18-run lead to work with. Still, Hoover came into the tourney with a 3-5 record and a nice earned run average. Hoover says the so-called Sophomore Jinx has not been on his "I kinda laugh when I think about that," Hoover smiled. Bulldog assistant coach Mike Rupcich said at the beginning of the season the Jinx would not get to the pitcher, saying Hoover was "too much ofa competitor to let it." The next night it was timely hitting and not pitching. Mound ace Randy Graham was hit for four runs in six and a third innings, but the Bulldogs put away USL Geels. pinch hitting for starting reciever Emery Phillips, stroked two-run double to spur the rally. Fresno had earlier erupted for four in the fifth frame, helped along by a two-run double by Tim Trnessen. Bennett said the chilly weather at Beiden Field contributed to Graham's less-than-desirable outing. Bennett said the junior pitcher's back tightened up and he eventually left the game after striking Bob Jacobsen tossed two and two- thirds innings of one-hit relief, fanning three and walking just one. Graham was able to get the win for Fresno, his eighth without a defeat. He still ranks among the nation's leaders in Walker worked the 4:30 p.m. contest Friday afternoon on the hill and turned in his'four-hit gem. a 6-0 victory over USL. "I was ahead of the hitters and had my slider working good." Walker said. "I worked on mechanics all week (before the tourney) and I straightened out a few Walker said he had developed some bad habits after winter league play and he and Bennett were able lo correct those. "It helps for the catcher to call a good game and Robby (Geeb) did." Walker added. 'I think I only shook him off The Bulldogs scored a 6-0 win in that one, behind three-hit ■performances by Pendleton and Dalena. Pendleton drove in three runs and Dalena ripped his fourth home runs of the season, a solo shoe in the sixth inning. The night contest saw FSU score a 3-2 win over Long Beach made Bennett look like a getuaus. Bennett km up three straight pinch hitters in the bottom of the ninth inning, including tittle-used Jim Cranford and Cal Cain, and also sent in reserve outfielder Rod Davit as a pinch runner (for Cranford). Gceis. Cain and Cranford all came through with sharp singles and Xavier followed with his game-winning hit to give Fresno the win. The big inning almost overshadowed a gutty mound performance by Rob Emerson. Emerson, who had thrown only 10 gave up just two runs for his third win of But Bennett said the junior, used mainly in long relief, came very close to not finishing the game. "He had the same stuff, but was getting the ball up." Bennett explained. "If he would have given up one more run. he would have had to come out." The 49crs stranded nine runners and touched Emerson for eight hits. . "They played well, we played well — it was a good game." Bennett said. That was Fresno's fourth win of the Classic. Since the rest of the field had at least three losses. FSU had it clinched. Still. Bennett said he was looking forward to playing the games Saturday. He said the fact the Bulldogs had the tourney clinched did not lake away any competitiveness from the .games. "All these teams want to win every game — they want to have good season records," Bennett explained. "Ratings are not everything, but they're part of it."
