Pate 2-tfce Daily Colletian-April 29, 1982 April 29,1982-the Daly Collegian-Page 3 JEFFERSON STARSHIP Starship plans campus landing Jefferson Starship, Pablo Cruise, and Krokus will lead the rock and roll charge in the Vintage Days celebration under the stars Friday night beginning at 8 p.m. With another successful album out. the Jefferson Starship will headline the show, bringing back the familiar voice of Grace Slick to the added pleasure of Starship lilting o-lead with Mickey Slick Thomas at t'fe show Friday. Slick joined the group in 1966, leading the then Jefferson Airplane to a string of The band was originally formed in 1965 when Marty Balin met Paul Kantner at the Drinking Gourd, a San Francisco club. The two joined forces to form the folk-rock group Jefferson Airplane. The group performed at the historic Monterey Pop Festival in January 1967. and its growing following led it to be of the featured bands at the Woodstock Pop Festival in 1969. With Paul Kantner, Slick helped form :he Jefferson Starship in 1974. Red Octopus, their second a" Slarsl i, hit tl :harts. Over two and a half r of the record have been sold to date. Red Octopus was certified platinum, as was the group's third effort. Spitfire. The free concert will be presented at noon in the open air courtyard of the Del Webb Building. The CSUF Jazz Band is under the direction of Dr. Lawrence Sutherland. CSUF professor of music. He said the outdoor program will include a lot of the big band jazz sounds in the tradition of Woody Herman and Count Basic. The CSU Fgroup has performed throughout California and has earned an international reputation for excellence. y There are two University Downtown programs left for the spring semester. CSU F resident folk artist Lydia Mendoza will present a program May 6 in conjunction with the Cinco de Mayo festivities. Boomtown to explode with Saturday activties Gambling fever high for Casino Night festivities Two nights in Reno for two at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino, dinner for two at Suttons and a $50 tennis racquet' are some of the prizes to be auctioned off tonight at the Wine Cellar Casino Night in the Residence Dining Hall. About 110 prizes will either be auctioned off or raffled at the casino night, which begins at 8 pm and goes to Admission is 50 cents for students and 75 cents for non-students. Once in, participants will receive $1,000 worth of gambling money and one raffle ticket. A raffle will be held every hour and items to be raffled off include albums, frisbees, movie passes and so on. Thirty tables of blackjack: two of poker; one of wheel of fortune: one of craps: and one of roulette will be set up. If a participant loses all of her or his money, for 25 cents he or she can buy an additional $1,000 and a raffle ticket. Drinks, such as virgin daiquiris, coke or sprite. A total of 46 booths will be participating in the Boomtown Carnival Saturday night ranging from a massage parlor to a singing telegram service. TTiere will be a wide variety of booths, nofany of the booths are two ofa kind, they are different,* said Marietta Bemabe, coordinator of the Boomtown Carnival. The Boomtown Jail, sponsored by the. Western Society of Criminology, will be catching victims as well as the Indian Ambush, a new booth, which will have Indians going after people. SAE will be serving virgin Daiquiris and Delta Zeta will be selling balloons and delivering singing telegrams at the carnival. The Student Nurses of California will have a massage parlor and the SAE Little Sisters will have a kissing booth. There will be a wide range of food booths available for those whoare willing to experiment with their taste buds. Alpha Gamma Rho will be serving barbecue chicken and the Armenian students will be serving Shish Kebab. The Alabama Stammers will be serving potato skins and Lambda Chi Alpha will have nachoes. Various games will be featured for those who have a competitive edge. Phi Chi Theta will have a ring toss, IEEE and Kappa Nu, an engineering fraternity will feature an electronic horserace. Combined teams for Birch and Sycamore Halts will hold a ping pong ball throw and the Navigators, a religious organization, will put on a dart throwing The carnival will be located in the Amphitheatre parking lot and will run from 6 p.m. to midnight with the Air Guitar Show starting at 6 p.m. in the Amphitheatre. The show will consist of 13 groups displaying their musical imitation abilities. A country western group, the Boy Howdy Band from Clovis, is back by 'popular demand* and will be playing in the Amphitheatre beginning at 8 p.m. c will b vided by dorm residents-.
