. The purpose of the Collegian The turmoil surrounding the Dairy Cdafcgian bet spring hat not been forgotten as the paper resumes its 61st year of publication today. The Coltgain received a variety of crihcmm from factions of the school population for its coverage of campus events. Meinbeis of the Associated Students Senate voiced the strongest rmmyproi'fil. charging Editor in Chaef Wayne Agner with racism, unrespon iivanass to students and overal poor performance as editor. Al of which brings about a very important question: Just what purpose does the Do*V Cnlajaon serve anyway? That same query was ranted more than 44 years ago. The! then editor oi the Comssjion, using what turned out to be exceptional foresight, responded eloquently on March 1, 1938 with a three poant answer that is just as r sis vent now as it was then. | The primary reasonable wrote, why a college newspaper exists are: "1. To gather and dmaemanaH accounts of al activities on campus, to be fair in such treatment, to assign space to stories according to their value rather than attempt to tickle anyone's vanity. "2. To adopt an exatonal pobcy that reflects — as ctosety as it is poesable to determine — the opinion of a masonry of the students. At any rate, al editorials are luppossd to reflect not the official colege attitude, but the opinion of the (edrtonaJ board). "3. To grve students witerested in jourrmamm an opportunity to get a working knowledge of the newspaper profession, if such it may be riled " The 0m% Crilsjjan shouid — and ami — ofler praise when it is due. At the same time, however, this paper wil not shy away from its right to comment or criticism. For no one — whether it be the university president, student body president or Doiry Colepon editor — * so perfect as to be above criticism. It is, in fact, our duty to point out where weaknesses exist in order that they may be corrected.
