Gene Rigler. Rigler is a Peace Corps recruiter, and will be on campus tomorrow through Thursday at a table in front of the CSUF College Union from 9 a.m to 3 Films will be shown at noon on Wednesday in Room 312 of the Union. Rigler said a Peace Corps spokesman would be on hand to answer question. Rigler served in the Peace Corps from 1969 to 1971 in Nepal, a country situated between India and China. While engineers, urban planners, nurses, medical tab technicians and 'lots of math and science teachers' are needed .. most, Rigler said that 'you can qualify ' more easily than you think,' In his Own case, he said, he had a political science degree but had worked oh his family's farm-ranch while growing up in Texas. His agricultural background had give* him enough training to work as a v*ocational agriciihural instructor for sixth and seventh graders. A bachelor's degree was usually required, Rigler said, because the host country 'is concerned with the quality of people' it allows into the country. In addition to the person's major, Rigler said the Peace Corps also checked for secrjodary skills and hobbies. 'With - some additional training, those skills can be used,'he said. Basic knowledge in such areas as hygiene is also helpful, he said. Artother •vet that required no specialized background was community service. The Peace Corps fills the gap until there are people in the host country trained to take over. Our goal is to. foster independence. Hopefully, some day we'll work ourselves out of ajob.' •.;_>;-■• During the year, 4,000 new-Peace Corps volunteers and 1,590 new VISTAs are expected to go into training. ' VISTA volunteers serve primarily as community organizers in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa. Peace Corps works outside the United States in developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America. Persons who expect to graduate in the next nine months and are interested in applying, for the Peace Corps or VISTA can pick up a form in the Career Planning Office in Joyal Administration Building Room 225 and sign up for an Interview.
