March 2, 1984 SlppD-rtfo - I Bulldog defense too much for Spartans SAN JOSE — Relying on its stiff, trademark defense and Ron Anderson's 17 points on offense, the Fresno State basketball team finally broke loosl in tbe second half last night to shut down San Jose State 43-33 in the San Jose Civic Auditorium. The win was Fresno State's fifth in a row, although with UC-lrvine's 77-74 win over UNLV last night, the Bulldogs are still a step out of second place in the PCAA with a 12-5 conference record. The Anteaters hold down the second spot with a 13-4 mark. San Jose State, despite going scoreless for the first 7:18 of the first half, played some unusually stingy defense throughout the contest and actually led 18-16 late in the first half. But the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on several consecutive Spartan turnovers in the second half and pulled away with their 21st victory against seven losses in the season. "Maybe-it wasn't one of the most excit ing games of the season," said Fresno State coach Boyd Grant, "but it wasa win and that's what counts." Part of the reason for the Bulldogs inability to break the game open was the foul trouble forward Bernard Thompson got himself into early on in the game. Thompson, who finished with a season- low four points, fouled out of the game with 8:28 left to play. With Thompson on the bench, Anderson picked up the slack and scored six out of Fresno State's next eight points to pull the Bulldogs up by a 38-30 margin. The Bulldogs cruised the rest of the way in holding San Jose State to only three points in the final 4:30 of the game. The Spartans' 33 points were the least amount of points scored by a Bulldog opponent in two yean. At times, Fresno State was having its problems putting some points on Ihe board as well. After jumping out to a 8-0 j margin in the first eight minutes of play. San Jose State suddenly came alive when 6-1 sophomore guard Ward Ferris dunked on a fast break after Bulldog guard Mitch Arnold tried to save a wayward pass from going out of bounds. Ferris scored the Spartans' first six points of the game to bring pull the south bay collegians within two points of the Bulldogs, although he failed to put the ball through the hoop again in the game. Both teams were tied 20-20 after the first 20 minutes of the game. In the initial moments of the second half, however, the Fresno State defense shifted into its usual stingy mode. San Jose State was not to score until 7 minutes and 25 seconds had ticked off the clock. Mitch Arnold followed up Anderson's 17 points with nine, while Scott Barnes scored five points and hauled down six rebounds. ,■ For San Jose State, Keith Norwood, Stoney Evans, Bobby Evans and Ferris all had six points. Fresno State will travel down to Long Beach State tommorrow for its final regular season game of the year. The Build op still need a loss by UC-lrvine in order to gain the important second seed position in the upcoming PCAA Tournament March 8-10 in the Forum.
