I saw him playing once and Jethro Tull came on stage and Jethro started playing the flute. That wa* fantastic. Then, get tht*, Lynard Skynard and Molly Hatchet came on stage playing th* guitar*. Lynard and Molly, yea, both of 'em. Tho** guys are probably my four favorite per- Actually Lynard Skynard, Molly Hatchet and Jethro Tull all are, or were, names of groups, not individual performers. Steely Den Is not even a group. It started out a* a group, but has, over Its approximately 10-year existence dwindled down to a duo, that of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Becker and Fagen write all th* materia), and bring In the best musicians In the world to play on their albums. Th* list of luminaries Is long and impressive on the new Gaert** LP. Randy and Mike Brecker on horn*, Chuck Rainey on bass, Tom Scott on tenor and alto sax and clarinet, Steve Khan on guitars, Charlie's Steve Gadd on drums, Toto's Jeff Porcaro on drums, Dire Straits' Mark Knop- flex on guitars, David Sanborn on alto sax. Rick Derringer on guitars, Joe Sample on electric piano, and the Dooble Brothers' Michael McDonald on backing vocals. Also Joining in on the fun are lesser known, but no less talented session musicians. Becker and Fagen do play on the al- cord. Nothing less than excellence is expected of Steely Dan and nothing less I* aver delivered. Caere* is rock from a duo who Insist on quality. The lyrics on Caucho are less shrouded In mystery and doubt* talk than earlier albums. Where before we often had to take a wild guess •t what Steely Dan meant, on Caucho at least we have some due. There are the usual references to drugs that Steely Dan used so often previously, in'Hey Nineteen,* The Cuervo Cold m V The fine Colombian Make tonight a wonderful thing' 'Tonight when I chase the dragon And the silver will turn to gold Time out of mind' (To 'chase the dragon' is to snort heroin.)
