Monday, Febniary 1,1988 Page 3 Opinion LETTERS Continued from page 2 We developed such a special bond last semester. You know like the kind of bond lhat exists between a cobra and a mongoose. Investigating worth Dear Editor. The Associated Students Senate Public Affairs Committee (the Condom Committee) is not trying to force condoms into ihe shadowy crevices of "dirty" rest- rooms. In fact, all that the public affairs committee has been doing is conducting an investigation of the enure issue to determine .f installation of condom machines is a worthwhile direction, all this at ihe request of numerous students. Harold Blood has eloquently illustrated that this issue is not a simple one. Consequcndy . a decision has not been made by the Senate on this issue. I am not. nor do I claim to be leader of the "condom movement." I served only as an information source for what the public affairs committee was and is doing. So to Ed Cahill, I'm sorry that it appeared that 1 was the band leader of this movement and the recipient of undue attention. I cannoi, however, control the reporting staff nor the editorial content of this newspaper. Scott Vick Legislative VJce-President Associated Students, Inc. AFROTC wants you Dear Editor, On Thursday, January 28, it was announced to the cadets of AFROTC Det 035 at Fresno State thai as of 1989, the corps would shut down this detachment completely. The announcement came as a surprise to all of us cadets. We were stunned, and in many cases, uncertain of our future. Fresno State has had an AFROTC chapter for four decades, and in that ume, this chapter has done much more than train many college students to become professional officers in ihe Air Force. AFROTC has provided services to both the university and surrounding community as well, including color guards and parking attendants for football games. Scholarships are made available to bright students who would otherwise not be financially able to attend a university. Indeed, the presence of such an institution adds to the diversity and range of programs offered by the university, and it is the. only program in the Central Valley between Sacramento and Los Angeles. The closure of this institution will not only be a loss to its cadets, but will also be a blow to the university as a whole. Fortunately, the closure is not irreversible. Congressional pressure could well influence the decision to be overturned, but that pressure musi be very strong. We as cadets of AFROTC and students of Fresno State have committed ourselves to providing our congressmen with this pressure, but we need your help if our efforts are to prevail. Please write your congressman or call him, leiting you know how you feel about this issue. Also, a petition will be made available in the Free Speech area for signatures, and we encourage anyone who can to add their name to the list With hard work and the right amount of pressure, we can win this battle—but we need your help!
