• artSpecial Tuesday, March 1,1988 RIVALRY! Fresno State - UNLV is the closest thing the PCAA has to Hatfield-McCoy PHOTOS BY RON HOLMAN STORY BY JON MATSUNE Ne levada-Las Vegas Coach Jerry Tarkanian strolled into the press conference after his team's 71-60 victory over Fresno State last Saturday in Selland Arena. "I have rarely come into Selland Arena and not had a battle," he said. These are the hardest games." At first listen, the words had lo seem somewhat absurd to a few of the people present After all, Fresno Stale had jusi lost its 16ih game of the season — more games ihan UNLV lost in the past four seasons. And an 11-point margin does not exactly signify a fight to the finish. Bui Tarkanian was speaking from experience. His basketball program, the most successful on the Wesi Coast for ihe past 10 years, had met some of its stiffest challenges not just in Selland Arena , but against Fresno State teams in general. In the finals of ihe 1984 Pacific Coast Alhletic Association Toumamem in Inglewood, Tarkanian's No. 9-ranked Runnin' Rebels were lucky to pull out a 66-63 overtime win. UNLV got its winning points on a desperation, three-point shot by guard Eric Booker with three seconds left In February of 1984, Tarkanian brought his No. 5 Rebels into Selland Arena and got blown out 68-43. U was UNLV's worst loss in three years, and its lowest point total in 21 seasons. A month laicr, the Rebels fell to the Bulldogs 51-49 in the PCAA loumey finals in Inglewood. Another Zetland nightmare saw Tarkanian's Rebels drop a 61 -52 decision to ihe "Dogs in 1985. Fresno State has yet to defeat UNLV since then. Over the past three years, the once-powerful 'Dogs have gone 33-51 overall. Despite all that an FSU-UNLV rivalry still exists and Tarkanian talks almost as if the Bulldogs are still a national power. "I'm happy any time we win here," he said after Saturday's game. "I tell my coaches lhat my penance for being coach at UNLV is lhat once a year, I have to come to Selland Arena." The Bulldogs, though, haven't come to within 11 points of the Rebels since 1985. Last year, in Las Vegas' Thomas and Mack Center, UNLV demolished FSU 106-58. FSU and UNLV have met 15 times since the laner joined the PCAA in 1982 and the Rebels have won 12 — including the last seven in a row. In addition, the 'Dogs have not come within 11 points since the 1985 win. Is this a rivalry on the downslide? For Saturday's contest, Selland Arena seats that had been empty for much of the season were filled by red-clad FSU supporters. And the underdog Bulldogs made the Rebels fight hard for the 11- poini victory.. "It's the closest thing the PCAA has to a Big East-type rivalry," said FSU Sports Information Scott Johnson. "When they come up here, everybody wants to go to lhe game. When we go to Las Vegas, everybody wants to see Fresno State play." The Rebels, of course, have sold oul every lime they've been to Selland this decade. Despite bringing losing learns into Las Vegas' Thomas and Mack Center the last three years, the Bulldogs have played to respective crowds of 16,798, 18.068 and 17,934. Another reason the UNLV-FSU matchups have been so attractive is the Please see RIVALRY, page 8
