-nge.4. Tuesday. February^, 1989 Vie Daily Collegian AIDS Continued from page 1 advocated more AIDS awareness on campus, said he was also pleased with the initiation of a voluntary testing program at CSUF. "It's a monumental step for a university that has always seemed to have been conservative in its dealings with controversial issues such as AIDS," he said. Vincent said that he feels many people who want to be tested for the AIDS virus will be reluctant to do so for a number of reasons. Sam Gitchel "A lot of people are afraid to be seen,' Vincent said of walking into the health center for the test. "You may be seen as being gay, bisexual, an I-V drug user or just sexually promiscuous." There are a number of other test sites in Fresno that offer HIV anti-body testing, but many of these sites arc "confidential" as opposed to "anonymous." Confidential testing may involve some identification whereas anonymous tesung involves none whatsoever. Gitchel emphasized that the CSUF Health Center sponsors a completely anonymous AIDS testing program where no names are ever requested or used on records. Gitchel said that development of the tesung program involved a great degree of concern for insuring anonymity. "Wc One of the main purposes of testing is to better educate peo¬ ple about their immune status in order to prevent the spread of AIDS to others. —Sam Gitchel were very careful in setting up a procedure to protect the privacy of people who want to be tested."
