Sports Caijfornia State University, Fresno FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1989 One more win needed By Marcus Musacchio Sports Writer After a disastrous first half, the Bulldogs defense came alive to shut down the scrappy Spartans of San Jose State in a much needed 73-59 victory at Selland Arena last night. The Bulldogs ended their three-game losing streak to even their record at 13-13 overall and 8-9 in conference. Despite leading 37-36 at the half, coach Bill Berry's hard-luck Spartans were slapped for their 15th straight loss. San Jose Stale dropped to 1-16 overall and 5-21 in the Big West Kevin Stevenson had a career high 20 points, nailing fotirof-four from three-point range and pulling down six rebounds m the process. Jervis Cole scored his 1.408 point early in the second half to surpass Roy Jones (73-'76) and move into fourth place on the all-time FSU scoring list. Cole finished the game with 14 points to bring his career point total to 1,416. He also contributed four rebounds and two blocked shots. Wilben Hooker ended his drought of late, putting in 12 points including a three-pointer. Hooker now has 44 treys, just two short of the FSU season record. The Spartans scored the last four points of the first-half, including a last second jumper by forward Craig McPherson to go up by one at intermission. "I don't know if I've ever been more down after the fust half," said Ron Adams, adding that San Jose's tough penetration had something to do with the Bulldogs early trouble. The Spartans were .520 from the field in the first half, including several shots which Adams termed 'unusual." One such shot came when Tom Desiano tossed a pass inside which accidentally rallied through. Adams thought San Jose out-played his team in the first half and said thai they couldn't get inside early as they wanted to, due lo turnovers. Adams was most disturbed by his teams first-half defense. "When we don't play good defense. we're not very good." said the coach. Fresno Stale's defense came out tough and allowed the Spartans only 22 points in the sccond-hajf. San Jose's hot shooung turned ice-cold under the Bulldog defense, which allowed them to hit only .333 from the field in the last period for a game average of .440. With one run in the sixth and four in the seventh, FSU came from behind to defeat the Oregon State Beavers 5-2 at Beiden Field. It was the Bulldogs si nth Knight win to run their record to 9-6 The Bulldogs' winning rally came with two outs in the seventh when four straight batters reached base off losing pitcher Jeff Ous (0-1). Eddie Bustamante drove in Steve Hosey. whose single extended his hitting streak to 12 games, with a single up the middle to tie the score at 2-2. Steve Vondran then hit a rouunc grounder to third baseman Troy Haugcn who tried to force Bustamante at second, but was late with the throw. It proved to be costly as the next batter, second baseman Tcrancc Frazier. dropped in a wind-aided bloop double between three fielders to bring in Bus- tamante with the winning run. "That play really helped us because it prolonged the inning and then we got lhe rally going after that," said Head Coach Bob Benrteti, "u really picked-up the ballclub." In between, she picked up a win in relief against Oregon. She replaced starter Carie Dever, who had given np two runs in the top of the third, after 2 1/3 innings.
